The Tribes of Palos Verdes
The Tribes of Palos Verdes: A Novel | Joy Nicholson
7 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
In The Tribes of Palos Verdes by Joy Nicholson, Medina Mason is a defiant, awkward newcomer to the affluent beach community of Palos Verdes, California. As her parents' marriage disintegrates and her beloved brother falls prey to the temptations of drugs and the lunacy of their mother, Medina surfs to survive, finding a bitter solace in the rough comfort of the waves. This is the moving story of growing up "different," of the love between siblings, and of one girl's power to save herself.

Bailedbailed

Made it 20 pages before I lost patience with this one. It felt like the author was trying way too hard to be edgy and shocking by piling on traumas for everyone. Probably would have stuck it out if I read this as a teenager when it originally caught my eye 🤷🏻‍♀️

First Oct #roll100 is a bail ✅

Well, this was tough to get through! It took me basically a year of multiple checkouts from the library bc Jennifer Garner is in the movie adaptation & I love her! But dang I would not recommend this book. There are sexual assaults that are glazed over and nothing happens for the vast majority of the book only for so much to happen in the final pages that it feels it comes out of nowhere as opposed to a constant build. Won‘t read another of hers.

mcipher That sounds so disappointing! Hope the movie is good at least. 6y
MyNamesParadise Thanks! Yeah it will probably be better than the book. They could change a ton and it wouldn‘t annoy me, lol! 6y

I was looking for fiction that included surfing in it. This book was mentioned by a surfing magazine, so I tried it. Quick read. Bleak, but interesting. I think it may be somewhat based on the author‘s life. This book proves that money and privilege is empty without the proper kind of love. Set in early 80s.

Although I swore off book hauls and I‘m supposedly a “minimalist in training”, I had a weak book outlet moment. Five books $16.85 and that includes $5 shipping. In addition to the referenced book, there are: This Adventure Ends, Dreamology, Love Letters To The Dead, Emmy& Oliver.

JaclynW We took our 2 oldest kids to stay on the Queen Mary for one night years ago. My oldest daughter was totally creeped out. 👻 My son loved it! 😄 Long Beach is a beautiful city! 7y

Relatable coming-of-age story. A teen discovers the importance of staying true to herself, even as her home life dissolves. Surfing references; likely set in 1980s. Realistic take on Southern California social cliques & rules. Narrator Jorjeana Marie did a good job. Well worth the read/listen.

ForestAvenuePress I'll recommend this to my surfer writer friend! 9y

I bailed on And I Darken. Couldn't get into it. Hoping this one will grab me. A family moves from Michigan to California. The 14-year-old daughter struggles to adjust to new cultural / social rules, her parents' failing marriage, & her brother's downward spiral. Surfing may be her only solace.

sherrynuts This sounds like a good story. Please let us know what your thoughts are during and/or after! 9y
ColleenLindsay I read this when it first came out. I remember liking it a lot. 9y
