Pickpick

A beautifully restrained story about the close friendship of two quite different men in 1914. The contrast between England, the rest camp and the trenches evokes the strange dissociation felt by the soldiers for whom the only real certainty is the return to the Line. It's terribly sad and beneath the calm tone thrums a thread of anxiety of fear that underlies the awful normalisation of tragedy and horror.

saresmoore Wonderfully said, Moray! 7y
LeahBergen Lovely review. I‘m intrigued! 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore @leahbergen thanks, ladies. There's something about WWI fiction that is so powerfully evocative of the futility and self-aggrandisement of war. I suppose as the first really modern war (the war to end all wars!) it makes me wonder how the hell we still have learned nothing, even a hundred years on 🙁 7y
