This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Though we have made best efforts - the books may have occasional errors that do not impede the reading experience. We believe this work is culturally important and have elected to bring the book back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide.

I love every Dostoyevsky quote I‘ve ever stumbled upon. I‘ve owned a copy of The Brothers Karamazov for over a decade. I used to love reading Russians (in college). And yet, whenever I read the synopsis of any of Dostoyevsky‘s works, I end up less than jazzed.

Thoughts/suggestions?

vivastory This made me literally lol. My suggestion is a buddy read. A couple of years ago I & a group of littens tackled C&P that way & it was one of the best buddy read experiences I've ever had. Not only getting others' insights on the best translation, but the relentless doom & gloom of Dostoevsky was alleviated by the group's humor 3y
monalyisha @vivastory A team effort sounds like the way to go. Maybe someday! 😅 3y
The_Penniless_Author Maybe start with one of his short story collections. There are things there as good as any of his novels (The Double, The Gambler, Notes from the Underground, just to name a few), and that way you aren't committing to a 600-page book right off the bat. 3y

monalyisha @The_Penniless_Author I did have that thought! Is there a collection you particularly recommend? 3y
The_Penniless_Author @monalyisha So I just tried finding the collection I had back when I was in high school, but it seems like it might be out of print now. I see that Harper Perennial has 'Great Short Works of Fyodor Dostoevsky', which includes most of my favorite stories. That said, I can't vouch for the translation. (Of course, I can't speak Russian, so what do I know about ANY of the translations, really? Lol) 3y
monalyisha @The_Penniless_Author Ha! I mean, same. 😅 Thank you! 3y

Ubookquitous A million years ago when in high school I read Faulkner‘s As I Lay Dying on the beach and that was the reaction I had by people around me! 😂😂😂 6y
JosieG @Ubookquitous ?? Honestly, I rarely read "beach reads" so I always just bring along whatever I'm reading or whatever strikes me as interesting. 6y

Thndrstd LOL. I actually did. 😂 6y
Centique That‘s so funny - I usually take a chunkster away on summer holiday every year, so I was the one reading Bleak House on the beach. 😂😂 6y
JosieG @Centique Oh man! Light summer reading that is not! 😂 6y
