A Buddhist Grief Observed
A Buddhist Grief Observed | Guy Newland
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Amid the world-shattering pain of loss, what helps? “After the death of his beloved partner from cancer, Newland finds himself asking how effective his long years of Buddhist practice have been in helping him come to terms with overwhelming grief. This finely written book offers a lucid meditation on what it means to practice the Dharma when everything falls apart.” —Stephen Batchelor, author of Buddhism without Beliefs and After Buddhism In the tradition of C. S. Lewis’s A Grief Observed, Guy Newland offers this brave record of falling to pieces and then learning to make sense of his pain and grief within his spiritual tradition. Drawing inspiration from all corners of the Buddhist world—from Dogen and the Dalai Lama, to Pema Chödrön and ancient Pali texts—this book reverberates with honesty, kindness, and deep humanity. Newland shows us the power of responding fully and authentically to the death of a loved one. “A sad, beautiful, and necessary book—and a map waiting for many who will need it.” —James Ishmael Ford, author of If You’re Lucky Your Heart Will Break “Guy Newland faces squarely the pain of death and the pain of grief and offers a work of uncommon power, insight, and honesty—and extraordinary compassion.” —Jay L. Garfield, author of Engaging Buddhism

Mehso-so

Lots of good content in this book but I found the style a bit disjointed. Not for Buddhist newbies, this is a commentary not a how-to. Full review available at doddyaboutbooks.wordpress.com
Thanks Netgalley!

Trav That's disappointing! Is this your first NetGalley review? 8y
Sue @Trav Sure is. 8y

Sue

I've entered Netgalley land, and what a wonderful place it seems to be! I requested (and was approved very quickly) for a number of books even though I was outside the region for most of them. Yay!
Let the adventure begin!!

KrisConstantReader Me, too! I just joined several days ago and I'm already so behind. Isn't it great? 8y
Sue @KrisConstantReader it's completely awesome!! 8y
KrisConstantReader I didn't think I'd get approved for any since I don't have a blog or anything--so far I've gotten 10, read and reviewed 3. 8y

NerdyRev @KrisConstantReader Even if you don't have a blog, you have to post a review on Amazon and/or Goodreads. 8y
NerdyRev I love NetGalley. They have been very generous recently. 8y
KrisConstantReader Yes, I've been posting on Goodreads and even here. 8y
Sue @NerdyRev @KrisConstantReader I'm very pleased they've been generous and that good reads and Amazon are options. My blog is brand spanking new, so I'm happy to have the opportunity. I was worried there wouldn't be a lot for me given that I'm not in the US. 8y
Trav *Goes on net to see what NetGalley is*... How did I not know about this??? 8y
KrisConstantReader @Trav you should definitely give it a try. There's even a "read now" section where you don't need approval, you just download the books, read and review. 8y
KrisConstantReader @Trav that was me that sent you the request on Goodreads, thanks for the add! 8y
Trav @KrisConstantReader Signing up as we speak! You're welcome! I figured it would have been someone from the Litsy community :) 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I thought you had to have an active blog or podcast for net galley! 8y
KrisConstantReader @Trav feel free to message me on Goodreads if you have any questions. It's fairly easy; I just joined around a week ago or less. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa so did I! But I was shocked when I started getting approved within minutes. And for really good books! 8y
Trav @KrisConstantReader Thanks! Will do. I've just put a load of requests in so we'll see how I go. 8y
Trav Sue, is there an Australian equivalent to NetGalley that you're aware of? 8y
moranadatter I've been meaning to try that, but I have a serious case of imposter syndrome. 8y
Sue @Trav Not as far as I'm aware - but there are Aussie books and publishers on netgalley (penguin random house Australia being one). 8y
Trav Ah yes, I see! I requested around 20 books last night and still yet to be approved for any. I'm sad. 8y
Sue @Trav did you find the ones you can download without needing approval? 8y
Trav @Sue Not yet, I haven't explored the website properly because of how busy I've been. I really need to give it my full attention! I've finally been approved -- yay me! 8y
Sue @Trav yay! Hopefully the first of many! 8y

Pickpick

I lost my father 11 years ago and my mom 6 years ago. Sometimes a person just needs a book that lets them think about their feelings.

ReadingEnvy I also really love Pema Chodron's book on grief, When Things Fall Apart. 8y
