The Body in the Dumb River
The Body in the Dumb River: A Yorkshire Mystery | George Bellairs
6 posts | 6 read
Jim Teasdale has been drowned in the Dumb River, near Ely, miles from his Yorkshire home. His body, clearly dumped in the usually silent ('dumb') waterway, has been discovered before the killer intended -- disturbed by a torrential flood. With critical urgency it's up to Superintendent Littlejohn of Scotland Yard to trace the mystery of the unassuming victim's murder to its source, leaving waves of scandal and sensation in his wake as the hidden, salacious dealings of Jim Teasdale begin to surface.

A cleverly put together mystery with a victim with a double life and a horrible, horrible family. I enjoyed.

Mehso-so

More of a so-so for me relative to other British Library Crime Classics I‘ve read. It ended up being a quick read once I buckled down, but Littlejohn seemed to be more in the right place to prompt confessions than doing actual solving.

« There was a gilded parrot cage on the constable‘s desk and the occupant sounded wide awake in spite of the cloth which covered it. He kept making noises like the popping of corks and the pouring out of drinks. Now and then he shouted, ‘Jolly good health to you and me.´ » ??

Pretty enjoyable -- nothing special, but I read it in a day and was very curious about some of the characters' behaviour. I do find these classics restful!

(And hey, Yorkshire! Where I grew up, and now live.)
