Finished this book last night. This was a very different book than I normally read. The book tells through flashbacks story of Brighton and Angel, two children growing up in an insane asylum in the 1920s—1940s. It describes the struggles of the children and tortures faced by the patients. I have only two complaints with the book in the way it ended. If you want a very unique read, this is your book.

The author writes with such haunting, powerful, heart-wrenching innocence through the eyes of Brighton, a child born in an asylum during the 1920s. The despair and hopelessness of her teen years in the asylum are balanced out by her present-day 1990 voice in which we are aware that she‘s lived a good life after escaping the asylum and infuses the whole story with hope. I am still reeling from the beautiful complexity of this book.
