This was my #doublespin for Sept and just did not work for me. Sadness, because I adored Nothing to See Here. I was pretty bored with it. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I'm always sad when the second book I read by an author doesn't vibe like the first one. 22h

Here's my October list. I've been thinking about how I want to structure my reading next year. I am planning to limit my challenges and read either spines of a certain color each month from my shelves or focus on one shelf per month. I did not read near enough of my owned TBR and I am hoping this will help!

Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Press for the opportunity to read this book prior to publication. I was eagerly looking forward to Celeste's new book, as I adored her previous works. This new one is dystopian! Bird and his father live in Cambridge, where his dad, a former linguistics professor, works at the library at Harvard. PACT laws preserve American culture in this world, where Asians are not to be trusted,

Kangaj1 children can be removed from dissident parents, and unpatriotic books are removed from circulation. Bird's own mom had to flee the family due to PACT, and the rest of the story involves Bird's puzzle to find her again. The setup took a while, but about about 30-40% in I could not put this down and finished the rest in one day. I loved the discussions of linguistics, storytelling, poetry, and bad-ass librarians. 3w
Kangaj1 This book is terrifying and heart wrenching, and I will be thinking about this one for a long time.

I did like it, and I learned some things, but I felt like it was too long. The end was strange to me. I was also reading another by the same author at the same time - not recommended. I listened on audio and liked the narrator, but I sometimes had trouble telling the characters apart with her voices.

Soubhiville I‘m about to pick this one up too. 7mo
megnews I‘m listening on audio and 3 minutes in to the second chapter I had to say “wait this is a different character” and go back to understand. She doesn‘t narrate in a different voice and so far it makes it difficult to follow. Will have to pay close attention and hope it gets better. 6mo
Kangaj1 @megnews I had to keep checking my phone as the chapter title tells the POV. However, if the characters are having a conversation, it gets really confusing. 6mo

Sea of Tranquility: A Novel | Emily St. John Mandel

Thank you to Netgalley and Knopf for the opportunity to read and review this title prior to publication. I am stunned after reading this book, and I am having trouble with words to explain how amazing of a reading experience I just had. Mandel follows up her novels Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel with another one with loose connections to those worlds she made. It's a novel about art, the pandemic, metaphysics, and love.

Kangaj1 Edwin moves suddenly to Canada in 1912 and while walking through a forest encounters the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal. In 2020 a composer is sharing a creepy video with an audience - of his sister walking through that same forest and hearing the same sound. In 2203 Olive is on tour on Earth for one of her previous novels being optioned for film, and a portion of the novel includes a strange scene with a vision of violin music 8mo
Kangaj1 and trees and airships. In present day, 2401, Gaspery and his sister are researching whether or not they were all living in a simulation. Each section moves to a different time period, and the pacing and writing are exquisite. As soon as I finished the novel, I wanted to start over again and understand how she wove it all together so well! This is absolutely a 5 star read for me and may be my favorite of the year. 8mo
Kangaj1 I DNFed The Glass Hotel, and now I want to go pick it back up to see the connections between these novels. Outstanding. 8mo
