A Mad Desire to Dance
A Mad Desire to Dance | Elie Wiesel
12 posts | 4 read | 11 to read
From Elie Wiesel, a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and one of our fiercest moral voices, a provocative and deeply thoughtful new novel about a life shaped by the worst horrors of the twentieth century and one mans attempt to reclaim happiness. Doriel, a European expatriate living in New York, suffers from a profound sense of desperation and loss. His mother, a member of the Resistance, survived World War II only to die in an accident, together with his father, soon after. Doriel was a child during the war, and his knowledge of the Holocaust is largely limited to what he finds in movies, newsreels, and booksbut it is enough. Doriels parents and their secrets haunt him, leaving him filled with longing but unable to experience the most basic joys in life. He plunges into an intense study of Judaism, but instead of finding solace, he comes to believe that he is possessed by a dybbuk. Surrounded by ghosts, spurred on by demons, Doriel finally turns to Dr. Thrse Goldschmidt, a psychoanalyst who finds herself particularly intrigued by her patient. The two enter into an uneasy relationship based on exchange: of dreams, histories, and secrets. Despite Doriels initial resistance, Dr. Goldschmidt helps to bring him to a crossroadsand to a shocking denouement. In Doriels journey into the darkest regions of the soul, Elie Wiesel has written one of his most profoundly moving works of fiction, grounded always by his unparalleled moral compass. From the Hardcover edition.

Only one more book to read for #LMPBC #round4 #groupd It‘s going fast!
There was some beautiful writing in this book, but it just didn‘t work for me. I really enjoyed reading everyone‘s markups. Can‘t wait to get my book back to see what everyone wrote.

LazyDays @cherinium @DarcysMom @irre ladies I am terrible, I will be sending the books out today. I'm so sorry, busy toddler life over here and I keep forgetting to go to the Post office. The books are in my car and right after work I'll post the tracking. Sorry again for being extremely behind.💗💗😱 5y
cherinium That's ok. I'll be on the lookout. 5y

JanuarieTimewalker13 Wonderful review! 5y
cherinium It is definitely a difficult one. Not only is the subject matter sad and hard to stomach, but the stream of conciousness story telling can be confusing to wade through. It was SO worth the effort, though. 5y

Finally getting into this #LMPBC #round4 book. I have finished the first chapter and I am definitely intrigued.
@cherinium @irre @LazyDays

cherinium I hope you like it. The first couple of chapters are a little rough as it is told as stream of consciousness thinking from the mind of a mad man. 5y
DarcysMom @cherinium I am allowing myself to go with the flow, so I am having a good time with them. 5y

How is it possible that I am the first to review this novel on Litsy?

As one would expect from Wiesel, the writing is eloquent and soul-baring. This story takes you into the mind of a man who thinks himself mad as he struggles to find his place in the world after being orphaned. Does he truly suffer from madness, though? The reader has to decide that for their self.

One must be able to describe the most horrible things with the simplest words, in a calm voice, devoid of emotion. Some stories deserve more than the immediate emotion they arouse.

...I too have "a thousand stories" teeming in my brain; all they want is to come out and live again in the sunlight with the reward of being shared or to dissipate in the mist of anticipated suffering.
