This was an enjoyable read, despite some plot points that just seem far fetched and unbelievable.
In my quest to become a #wellreadwoman, I signed up for #ReadingEurope2020. I've not attempted a year long challenge before, so I like the idea of a low pressure one. I can make this as simple or as difficult as I want for myself. I think I will set a low goal for myself...probably only 1-2 books per month. I need to check my #tbrshelves for selections I already own! More information can be found on the hosts' feeds. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB
This fantasy series is a lot of fun with such complex, interesting characters. Admittedly, it took me a little longer to get sucked into this one than it did for The City of Brass, but once I was hooked, the story didn't let go. I'm looking forward to the final installment which is due out in a few months. #fantasy #magic #trilogy #strongfemalecharacters #bookmap
Not book related:
I realized I have not posted an update on Gimli for a couple months. And we have come a long way since then! Back then, he was 4mo old and only weighed about 2 pounds, was healing from pelvic and femur fractures, had a terrible upper respiratory infection, and we thought his liver was not working. Now, he's a sassy 6mo old who is mostly healthy. We're still fighting the URI, but everything else is perfect! 💕 #catsoflitsy
I remember being completely terrified by this movie as a teen. I've always been more frightened by scary stories without supernatural elements. For some reason, it has taken me this long to actually pick up the book.
A question to ponder:
Have any of you been tempted to "Go all Annie Wilkes" on a favorite author because of a twist or character death you didn't expect? ?

An emotional look at women in the military, past and present. Emily is driven to disguise herself as a man to serve along side her brother during the Civil War. Larkin is a veteran learning to live again as a civilian after 2 deployments to Afghanistan. Through Emily's diary, Larkin begins to cope with her PTSD and finds a way to enjoy life again. Thoroughly researched, Estes brings to life some "badass" women whose stories deserve telling. ??
I got confetti! 🥳🥳 I officially completed my Goodreads challenge of 75 books with this intriguing nonfiction book. I was fascinated by the true crime and fanaticism within the FLDS church that was examined by Krakauer. The history covered and trying to keep the many characters straight was sometimes a slog, but if you enjoy reading about religion, cults, or true crime, be sure to give this one a whirl. #goodreadschallenge #goalcompleted #success
Everything I loved about Beartown was just beaten to death in the sequel. I finished it out of love for the characters, but really just wish Backman had left it alone. All of his insightful observations about human nature grew tired very quickly this time around. Very disappointed. #audible #audiobook #unpopularopinion #nosequelneeded 🏒🏒🏒
Uh...you just lost me, Mr. Cutter. ?
Extinction Kit? Really? I've been in the vet field for 22 years, and I've never once heard of Euthasol being packaged this way. And, perhaps a little research on dosing of Euthasol would have been a good thing. While 2.5cc is certainly more than enough for a Guinea Pig, it's definitely not enough to "flatline a Great Dane." #factcheck
Inaccurate information like this just completely rips me out of a story.
A coworker once told me that she had to pull over while listening to this while driving just to collect herself. She said it was the scariest book she'd ever read. I immediately ordered it from #thriftbooks, but it has been sitting on my bookshelf for several months. I think today is a good day to finally get started. #horror #creepy #scarybook 😱
Exactly as I feared, this much awaited sequel was mostly a disappointment. It did hold my interest enough to not be a complete pan, but it certainly did not come even close to its predecessor. It seems to me that Atwood tried too hard to make the story align with things that have happened in the TV series. I am not one who felt all the questions needed to be answered, as they so clumsily were in this novel. #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #kindle
I'm not quite sure how to rate this one. It is a heartwarming story that examines how important it is to get to know someone's story before passing judgement. A single mom with Asperger's and a homeless man with a tragic past share a remarkable bond that teaches them the true meaning of family. I can see this as a Hallmark movie, which is to say, it is definitely not for me. I think others would probably love it, so I'll bump up my pan to a so-so.
I enjoy opportunities to read books that are out of my wheelhouse. Just past the 50 page mark, I'm concerned this one may be a bit too sappy for me. It seems like a quick read, though, so I'm going to see it through. Also, I still have gifts to unwrap as I continue through the story! #onceuponabookclub #booksubscription
The fall equinox has finally brought a cooler morning with low humidity, so I am enjoying the sunshine as I finish up my reread of the tagged book. THIS is my idea of perfection: blue skies, book and tea while not sweating through my clothes. I love the autumn! 🌞
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this sequel so far. I absolutely loved Beartown and was really looking forward this. At this stage, it's been nothing but rehashing what happened in Beartown. It's just not working for me, and I am terribly disappointed. Can anyone tell me that it has anything new to offer?
I was captivated by this fictionalized tale. While the author admits to embellishing the story, the thread of truth is there. I have seen a lot of comments and reviews that mention poor writing; but I have to admit, I didn't notice. Wondering if that has something to do with the fact that I listened to the #audiobook instead of reading a print copy. Regardless, I loved the glimpse into an Italian perspective on the second World War. Tissues needed
I've always had an affinity for this name (hence the name of my new kitten). I'm not sure if it's the name itself or the character that I love. But, it's been so long since I read LOTR, I didn't realize he isn't even mentioned in the 1st half of the book. I'm at the 60% mark, and this is his introduction. This is also the 1st appearance of Legolas. I'd forgotten how much happens BEFORE meeting these famous characters.
I've been missing my little Gimli the past couple days. He had to be hospitalized on Saturday and we've since learned that he has a serious congenital defect contributing to his failure to thrive. Currently awaiting a call with results of today's ultrasound. Trying to keep my mind occupied by revisiting Middle-Earth. #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #adventuresofthegmen #literarynames
Although I had this one mostly figured out (I was wrong on just a couple small details), I really enjoyed Ware's latest. It definitely had a great creepy vibe, and the MCs building paranoia was well paced. Please, never make me stay in a Smart House. 🙀 #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #adventuresofthegmen #onceuponabookclub #thriller #paranoia #creepy #sleeplessnights
A kitten recuperating from pelvic limb injuries makes the perfect reading companion. Gimli is figuring out how we do things around here. 💕 #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #adventuresofthegmen #lapwarmer #readingpartner #onceuponabookclub
I finished my reread of The Hobbit today. Then I discovered that there is a buddy read going on. I guess I was on the same wavelength as the others without even knowing. 😊
Is there a reading schedule or discussion questions? I'd love to chime in.
Soooooo, I'm a sucker and have decided to bring another (broken) kitty into my home. I've always wanted to name a cat Gimli, and although he's not a short and squat ginger, I've decided it's finally time to use the name. Then, I decided it is time for a reread of Tolkien's masterpieces in honor of the new arrival. Starting with Bilbo's tale. #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #newarrival #adventuresofthegmen #adoptdontshop
Wow! This book is INTENSE! Another story from WWII highlighting the heroism of every day people who could not sit by idly while heinous acts were being committed against the Jews. I don't know that I could be so brave. If this one isn't on your radar, it should be. #heros #heroism #WWII #italy #basedontrueevents #mountainclimbing #alps #escape #thekindnessofstrangers #loveoneanother
This book was enjoyable. I'm not quite sure it lived up to the hype, but it was fun to read.
In other news, my derpy boy is trying to pull himself up to the top of the messy bookcase. I'm sure there's something up there he wants to knock off, bc that's his thing lately. He has broken 3 custom made mugs recently, which breaks my heart. I cannot leave my tea on a table long enough to go pee. Ugh! #catsoflitsy #littenkitten #adventuresofthegmen
The first couple chapters grabbed me and made me think I would love this book. Then, it revealed itself to be a sappy romantic ghost story. Definitely not my thing. The older I get, I find it harder and harder to stomach the sickeningly sweet love stories. You know the ones--a couple fated to be together, love stories that endure into death. Gag! 🤢 I stayed around for the murder mystery component, which was entirely too easy to figure out.
Pretty clever and entertaining format of a "video journal."I felt that the angst and drama from the protagonist was annoying, yet realistic for a middle school girl. What I did not find realistic for middle school kids was the plot. I kept having to remind myself that the characters were 13. If they had been 16, it would have been far more believable for me. I'm in between pick and so-so. #audibleoriginal #audiobook
Enjoying a quiet morning out on the porch in my pajamas with my kindle. I've only just begun this book, and I am already totally in to it. Maybe I won't get dressed today. #porchlife #porchreading #pajamas #morningreading #kindle #ebook
This haunting memoir of mental illness and time spent in a psychiatric hospital kept me riveted and horrified. It hits a bit close to home, as I have a teenage niece struggling with mental illness and suicidal thoughts and actions. My heart just breaks for these young girls caught in the grip of their mental prisons. My only hope is that my niece's treatment is kinder than those of the late 60s shown in this book. #mentalillness #endthestigma 💔
I listened to this one. I wouldn't say I loved this book, but I did enjoy it. I'm intrigued by the psychology involved in cults. I thought this was a pretty realistic look at how an insecure girl's desire for acceptance could make her vulnerable. The prose was insightful but sometimes a bit too "flowery". #audiobook #audible #cult #cultmentality #commune
As much as I wanted to, I didn't enjoy this first book in a trilogy. The world building and character development were lacking. The author had several pet phrases that were used repeatedly. Also, there were several typos that should have been caught during proofreading. I feel no need to continue the series.
For such a short little story, it packs a punch. We are given a glimpse into a powerful family dynamic as an Indian mother in Delhi desparately tries to arrange a marriage for her daughter living in LA. Told completely in telephone conversations, the story starts off comically before turning darker toward the end. It was a lot of fun listening to this. #audibleoriginal #karma #arrangedmarriage #Indian
A fairly enjoyable memoir. There were a few LOL moments and a lot of waxing on about his philosophies on life and on the art of acting. I would not recommend this for anyone that would be bothered by spoilers for Breaking Bad, as several plot points are discussed throughout. #memoir #celebrity #audiobook
Not a bad book, but not a great one, either. I typically enjoy books with multiple POV, but it didn't work for me this time. The shifts in perspective were abrupt and jarring. Also, the characters seemed pretty flat to me, and several of them were just plain annoying.
I was interested enough to keep reading, so it's not a complete pan; but I doubt it will have a lasting impression on me.
Finally getting around to reading the current selection for #bbbbc #scififantasybookclub. Like many of the books chosen by this group of readers, I had never heard of this book. That's honestly what I love the most about this book club. I am definitely stretching my literary boundaries and having fun while doing it.
While I did find some places to be slow and repetitive, I ultimately really enjoyed the story of Clover Blue. Blue is a young boy living in a commune that is the only place he remembers. As he reaches the age when kids often start questioning the world, he becomes fixated on learning about his beginnings. Heartbreaking and at the same time, hopeful, this is a beautifully written book set in SoCA during the 70s. #family #tribe #love #identity
Actually.... baby snakes have less control of the amount of venom injected. Adult snakes have learned to not waste their valuable venom on bites that don't result in a meal, so adult venomous snakes deliver more dry bites.
Not to mention that the bitten character here is already showing symptoms of serious envenomation, so it seems silly to say that it could have been a dry bite. 😡
Rant over. Herpetologist wife problems. 🐍
