Mehso-so

In 1901, before the popularity of modern confessional memoirs, 19 year old Mary MacLane wrote what she called a ‘Portrayal‘. Ahead of her time, she does succeed in portraying the dark feelings of a teenage goth. Mary would have loved Tumblr. I get it. I was once a teen girl; I now have a teen girl. But, the thing is, as bright, insightful and modern as Mary was, there‘s only so much wallowing I can take before I find it insufferable.

I bought this not too long ago based primarily on one review:
"One of the most fascinatingly self-involved personalities of the 20th century." — The Age

It's the diary of a 19-year-old girl from Butte, Montana, in the very early 20th century. Apparently, it's brash and honest and melodramatic and exuberant and annoying (all the adjectives!). I can't wait to read it.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled It's so weird. And engrossing. I kept wondering if she was psychotic or a genius. Maybe both? 8y

"I find myself at this stage of womankind and nineteen years, a genius, a thief, a liar - a general moral vagabond, a fool more or less, and a philosopher..."

The diary of Mary MacLane, a teen girl struggling through her dull life in Butte, Montana in 1902. Mary was in love with the devil and a woman she refers to as "the anemone lady." She writes about her passions and her frustrations.
