Dancer from the Dance
Dancer from the Dance: A Novel | Andrew Holleran
One of the most important works of gay literature, this haunting, brilliant novel is a seriocomic remembrance of things past -- and still poignantly present. It depicts the adventures of Malone, a beautiful young man searching for love amid New York's emerging gay scene. From Manhattan's Everard Baths and after-hours discos to Fire Island's deserted parks and lavish orgies, Malone looks high and low for meaningful companionship. The person he finds is Sutherland, a campy quintessential queen -- and one of the most memorable literary creations of contemporary fiction. Hilarious, witty, and ultimately heartbreaking, Dancer from the Dance is truthful, provocative, outrageous fiction told in a voice as close to laughter as to tears.

Figured I can‘t start reading Holleran (he has a new one) without reading his most famous one. And then I‘ll read the follow-up to “Less.”

Happy PRIDE month y‘all. I‘m excited to try this beer from Fiction Beer Company here in Denver, named after the tagged book. I haven‘t ever read it, but would like to someday. Orange Creamsicle Witbier sounds like early summer to me, and their beers are great. ☀️

merelybookish Happy Pride! I don't even like beer and I'm tempted. 🍻 3y

Life altering.

“Who wants to read about sisters? Gay life fascinated you only because it is the life you were condemned to live . . . Canons of taste must be observed, darling . . . And the story of a boy‘s love for a boy will never capture the world‘s heart as the story of a boy‘s love for a girl. (Or a boy‘s love for his DOG)” (Holleran 14-15).

Pure beautiful heart warming and breaking gay poetry like a love song to a lost world of New York and the LGBTQ community between Stonewall and AIDS . Would've loved to dance with Malone .

The Great Gatsby comparisons are spot on. Life for Malone and Sutherland is one big party, filled with sex and drugs and dancing. But just as Fitzgerald exposed the dark heart of the glamorous 1920s, Holleran reveals the undercurrent of hollow melancholy and futile longing beneath all the carnal pleasures of New York's emerging gay scene in the 1970s. The writing is gorgeous and evocative, the story tender and wistful. A truly beautiful book.

Notafraidofwords A great gatsby comparison. I‘m in! 7y

An absolute fever dream of a book. It is full of melancholy + longing + wild nights out dancing - an ultimate quest for love + youth + beauty. I read that it was like the “gay Gatsby” and it was: New York City in the 70s with all the sparkly drugs/glamour/recklessness/parties/dancing/sex, with the loneliness that comes afterwards and the drive to fill that void and be loved. I took a plunge into a different world than mine, and I‘m glad I did.

Nothing is sticking right now for me so I‘m hopeful that this slender novel about Malone, a gay man living in New York, searching for love, will help me out. Also, LOVE the steamy cover and so we‘ll see 😍.

And, my lunch! One of my schools has February break this week and I am going to enjoy my Friday off!

mauveandrosysky Ahhhh I put this on my list recently! Eagerly awaiting your review. 7y

One of you said this was the best book you read in 2017, so of course I had to purchase it immediately. 🖤

I found an old favourite as I was sorting through the boxes of book donations to the Pride Centre. Fortunately there‘s already a nice copy in the collection because this one is in poor shape. #Queerbooks

Friday Fun with @Liberty - I don't have any books I return to repeatedly, but I first read Andrew Holleran's debut in the very early 90s. I bought it again earlier this year to reread now that I've been out for 20+ years, and married for 7. I've also had a bit of a 70s obsession this year.
