I knew that #JimThorpe was a celebrated Native American Olympian, but I did not now that he was stripped of his medals and records shortly after winning them when a newspaper revealed he had been paid for playing baseball, which made him ineligible to participate in the Olympics. It wasn‘t until 70 years later (almost 30 years after his death), that his amateur status and records were reinstated and his family received copies of his gold medals.

BookishMarginalia Written and illustrated by #DonBrown, this #picturebook biography contains an informative author‘s note about Thorpe‘s life as well as a bibliographical note about sources. 3y

#JimThorpe, who became known as the world‘s greatest athlete after his Olympic wins, was a victim of the “Indian schools” meant to erase Native American identity.

#FallIsBooked Day 6: The man who is to be known as the “World‘s Greatest Athlete” was called Bright Path. Carlisle was like his former schools which were depicted to be military strict, but they also had track and field, #football and baseball – sports activities which Jim naturally excelled in. This is also where Jim met his mentor, the famous Coach Pop Warner. My review of this picturebook biography: https://wp.me/pDlzr-27D
