Pogrom - November 1938
Pogrom - November 1938: Testimonies From 'Kristallnacht' | Wiener Library
2 posts | 1 to read
On November 9th and 10th 1938 the first act of the Holocaust was carried out. Across Germany and Austria over 1,200 synagogues were desecrated while thousands of Jewish businesses were attacked and looted, 90 people were killed and over 25,000 Jewish men were deported to concentration camps at Dachau, Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen (where hundreds died). The Jewish Central Information Office, later re-named The Wiener Library, immediately compiled eye-witness testimonies of the events: from face to face and telephone interviews, letters, written reports and newspaper articles. Some are raw and angry, some beg for help, others are defiant; their voices vividly bring to life the destruction that followed. Accompanied by material from the Librarys collection that sets the events in a historical and international context, as well as a detailed glossary.

After the Holocaust Education residential I attended last weekend, I now have a medium-sized book haul of further reading. I‘ve already started the tagged book, which is pretty heavy going but so interesting with it. The weather is terrible here today, so I‘m probably just going to stay at home and read things! #winning ☔️ 🌧 📚 📖 ☕️

charl08 Looks like an impressive stack. Hope to get some good recommendations. 5y
Connster @charl08 This one was recommended to me by one of the Holocaust educators on the course last weekend, so it should be good! 5y
Connster @charl08 I also wanted to focus on resistance/survival/assistance, as those are areas that widen the scope of the Holocaust and show the victims as not passive, like some texts do. Hopefully these will all be helpful with this! 5y

I‘ve spent the morning at the Wiener Library looking at British responses to the Holocaust and the afternoon at UCL‘s IOE. Both were fantastic! Bought the tagged book and couldn‘t wait to start it!
