When three delinquents hole up in an abandoned general store after their most recent robbery, to their great surprise, a letter drops through the mail slot in the store's shutter. This seemingly simple request for advice sets the trio on a journey of discovery as, over the course of a single night, they step into the role of the kindhearted former shopkeeper who devoted his waning years to offering thoughtful counsel to his correspondents. Through the lens of time, they share insight with those seeking guidance, and by morning, none of their lives will ever be the same. By acclaimed author Keigo Higashino, The Miracles of the Namiya General Store is a work that has touched the hearts of readers around the world.

Not quite time travel, but definitely time travel adjacent, which is close enough for me. I liked the interconnectedness of the characters and the overall optimism. I think it would appeal to people who liked Before the Coffee Gets Cold.

I've had high expectation on this one. All those good reviews spoiled me a little. Not the best way to start a book, right? But Higashino did not disappoint. Far from it. I think I had tears in my eyes when I read the last few pages. Such a touching story, so very well crafted. The whole book is magic, too!

This book was absolutely perfect! Three thieves hide out for the night in a closed down but magical general store and receive a letter asking for advice. They decide to answer the letter and soon a mystery unfolds. They way the stories interconnect was genius. I borrowed it from the library, but want to buy my own copy so I can re-read it whenever I want and force my husband to read it too.

wanderinglynn Thank you! 😀💜 2y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I am also enjoying this challenge, despite still being lost after uncovering 10 squares and looping back to at least two of them 😂 I think I'm going to try to make this a quarterly thing - a lot of the prompts will get reused, but I'll shuffle them around and mix in some new ones, because I feel like the spreadsheet method is working pretty well!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @wanderinglynn - Just let me know if you can't find it. I may be able to dig up my original post somewhere. But the Google doc is the main thing - I saved it with all the cells blacked out, so if you copy it for yourself, you can decide if you want to unveil them as you go, or look at all of them and plan a strategy!! 2y
wanderinglynn @TheAromaofBooks thanks Sarah! You think up the best reading games! 2y
suvata @TheAromaofBooks The spreadsheet worked really well. And I think that a quarterly thing would be awesome. All I know is that it was a brilliant idea so, thank you for coming up with it. 2y
TheAromaofBooks Well thank you!! The concept lived in my brain for a while before I figured out how to translate it into a workable format 😂 2y

this book is a bit out of my usual wheelhouse but I ultimately enjoyed it. the use of magical realism with a plot that loosely connects all the characters is both fun and a little absurd. at times, it also feels a bit too much like a froofy inspirational story but the aspects based on interacting with the past were pretty neat.

This has been a weird reading year so far. I've mostly done soothing rereads and it's ok. On the other hand, there is a constant flow of interesting new books that I keep piling on my TBR (pictured above) and soon my TBR will reach the moon.

But since I'm a mood reader to the Extreme, we just have to go with the flow. 🤔

Books Read at this point 96.
