Julie & Julia meets Jodi Picoult in this poignant and delectable novel with recipes, chronicling one womans journey of self-discovery at the stove. After the unexpected death of her parents, shy and sheltered twenty-six-year-old Ginny Selvaggio, isolated by Aspergers Syndrome, seeks comfort in family recipes. But the rich, peppery scent of her Nonnas soup draws an unexpected visitor into the kitchen: the ghost of Nonna herself, dead for twenty years, who appears with a cryptic warningbefore vanishing like steam from a cooling dish. A haunted kitchen isnt Ginnys only challenge. Her domineering sister Amanda insists on selling their parents house in Philadelphia, the only home Ginny has ever known. As she packs up her parents belongings, Ginny finds evidence of family secrets she isnt sure how to unravel. She knows how to turn milk into cheese and cream into butter, but she doesnt know why her mother hid a letter in the bedroom chimney, or the identity of the woman in her fathers photographs. The more she learns, the more she realizes the keys to these riddles lie with the dead, and theres only one way to get answers: cook from dead peoples recipes, raise their ghosts, and ask them. Offering a fascinating glimpse into the unique mind of a woman suffering from Aspergers and featuring evocative and mouth-watering descriptions of food, this lyrical novel is as delicious and joyful as a warm brownie.

McHenry also writes as Greer McAllister. I've been waiting for something from her after The Kitchen Daughter. She is from a small town nearby where I taught for a while and where I work on weekends at the public library she used as a child. Excited to get to dive into this one tonight

DebinHawaii I loved The Kitchen Daughter and had no idea she wrote under another name! Can't wait to hear what you think! 📚👍 3y

This is a fictional story about an undiagnosed woman with ASD, and the struggles she goes through when her parents die. One of her coping mechanisms is cooking, which is fantastic. Being around the same age and undiagnosed myself, I found myself relating to this book quite strongly. It's well written, and the author has done her research. If you're in this situation or know someone who is, or are just looking to increase your awareness, read this.

Contact.

When someone touches me wrong it isn‘t a feeling. It isn‘t hate or fear or pain. It is just blackness and a chant in me: get/out/get/out/get/out.

My fav #foodiefiction #ReadJanuary @RealLifeReading Ginny finds comfort in cooking and in describing her life experiences in relation to food. (David's skin is not just olive, but Arbequina!) Pictured is the placemat and menu from the Dining Divas Book Club event hosted by Montage Restaurant in Iowa, using recipes from The Kitchen Daughter: Squash Soup, Ribollita, Aji de Gallina, Midnight Cry Brownies. All so yummy! #litsycooks #recipesinfiction

All these #notinenglish are versions of The Kitchen Daughter. Interesting that publishers sometimes change the title as well as the cover. German title is The Chocolate Ghost. Italian is The Kitchen of Magic Ingredients. Yummy in any language. ☕

Gathering ingredients for Midnight Cry Brownies p.47. Seems appropriate lately. Rich chocolate sprinkled with coarse salt (using Merlot flavored). Finding comfort in books, good food, & fellow Littens. 💖#chocolate #foodandbooks #foodbooks #booksthatmakeyouhungry #recipesinfiction

5/5 Ginny struggles after the sudden death of her parents. While her sister believes she should be diagnosed with Asperger's, Ginny prefers to think of herself as having a certain "personality." Having difficulty interacting with others, Ginny finds comfort in comparing her experiences to foods & in methodical cooking & baking. While making deceased Nonna's shortbread, Nonna appears with a warning, hinting at a family secret Ginny must pursue.

DebinHawaii I really loved this book! ❤️📚🍴 3y
