The Landlady (A Roald Dahl Short Story)
The Landlady (A Roald Dahl Short Story) | Roald Dahl

The Landlady is a brilliant gem of a short story from Roald Dahl, the master of the sting in the tail. In The Landlady, Roald Dahl, one of the world's favourite authors, tells a sinister story about the darker side of human nature. Here, a young man in need of room meets a most accommodating landlady . . . The Landlady is taken from the short story collection Kiss Kiss, which includes ten other devious and shocking stories, featuring the wife who pawns the mink coat from her lover with unexpected results; the priceless piece of furniture that is the subject of a deceitful bargain; a wronged woman taking revenge on her dead husband, and others. 'Unnerving bedtime stories, subtle, proficient, hair-raising and done to a turn.' (San Francisco Chronicle ) This story is also available as a Penguin digital audio download read by Tamsin Greig. Roald Dahl, the brilliant and worldwide acclaimed author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and many more classics for children, also wrote scores of short stories for adults. These delightfully disturbing tales have often been filmed and were most recently the inspiration for the West End play, Roald Dahl's Twisted Tales by Jeremy Dyson. Roald Dahl's stories continue to make readers shiver today.

Has anyone read this? I didn't mean to read it but when I'm done, I have no clue what's going on! 😂 I get the storyline and I do have theories but I'd like to know what other readers think. (Spoilers in the comment.)

pppooraikul So it was cyanide and creepy murder? 7y
pppooraikul Or is she a witch of some sort? 7y
[DELETED] 1409720085 I haven't read this one but now I'm intrigued. 7y

pppooraikul @emilydecato Please do! It'll take less than fifteen minutes. :) 7y
Daisey I just read this story with my 8th graders this week! Their comments on her creepy behavior crack me up, but they wanted more from the ending as well. My understanding is cyanide to murder, then she preserves them and keeps them upstairs, just like the pets in the living room. 7y
pppooraikul @Daisey I thought so too. But then my younger sister pointed out that she must be a witch because how else could we explain the attracting sign? 7y
Daisey I never considered it as anything other than a realistic, if very creepy, story. Interesting idea . . . 7y

If you have not read this short story, look it up and read it now. You'll be glad you did. It is very creepy and perfect for fall. If you love it as much as I do, you will also want to find the Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode based on the story. #shortstory #booktober #scaretober
