In this Inspector Alleyn mystery, Alleyn investigates a grisly murder that happens during the performance of a ritual English folk dance and mummer's play to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

I'm using this for my final prompt of #52bookclub24, “Set during a holiday you don't celebrate,“ and with this, I've completed my 2024 challenge!

Although a fan of Golden Age mysteries, I‘ve never read Ngaio Marsh‘s Roderick Alleyn series. So, I added this one to Libby and listened while I worked on a marathon baking session last week. Like most GA mysteries, the casual racism, ableism, and sexism is startling, and it was evident here in the blackface elements of Morris Dancing, the treatment of one of the characters who has epilepsy, and the overall depiction of women.

PatriciaU That led me to do some quick research on Morris Dancing and found that the blackface has been replaced with other colors, like red and blue. I was also pleased to see women performing the dances now along with the men.

The murder mystery is well-plotted and Alleyn‘s character clever and interesting. I‘ll probably try a couple others in this series.
