On my blog today I‘ve listed my top authors over the past years of reading with my YA book group. One of them is Mildred Taylor, who was honoured today by the ALA with the Children‘s Literature Legacy Award. I‘ve also included my criteria for choosing these authors, in case you are curious.

Butterfinger Love love love Mildred Taylor. 4y
Butterfinger I thought I knew YA authors, but I only knew 4. Thanks for adding to my tbr list. I am a rereader too. I'm glad you put that as part of your criteria. 4y
Lindy @Butterfinger Since we agree on Mildred Taylor, I hope you will enjoy the new-to-you authors also. 😊 4y

I wanted to like this book so much. Her writing style is smooth and vivid. Taylor's book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is one of my childhood books I remember among the hundreds I read, but I just couldn't get excited to read. It felt disjointed & all over the place. As a history teacher, the Civil Rights movement is a fave to study & I liked that point of view, but that was it. This story disappointed & bored me most of the time.

Pickpick

From their farmland in Mississippi to Ohio to California and Massachusetts, members of the Logan family move across the USA. Cassie Logan, star of Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry & other books, is 19 in the early 1940s at the start of this final book in the series. Through the decades, we follow Cassie & her tight-knit family‘s experiences in the Great Migration, voter & civil rights activism & the issue of interracial marriage. #audiobook #ownvoices

Am I alone in getting a thrill when a novel teaches me trivia? In this case, it‘s that people cleaned wallpaper in the mid-twentieth century with “cleansing putty.” I found an example of the product online.

TrishB I‘m pretty sure my Mum had something like this in the 70s! (edited) 5y
squirrelbrain I remember this too @TrishB ! I also remember my Mum using bread to clean marks off walls.....🤷‍♀️ 5y
julesG I'm pretty sure I saw a recipe on how to make such putty on Pinterest the other day. It was a bit more elastic/runny though. They used it to clean out computer keyboards and other small and hard to reach spaces. 5y

Lindy @julesG That‘s a clever idea. 5y
TrishB @squirrelbrain I read that and thought OMG, yes, I remember that too!! How weird. 😁 5y
squirrelbrain @TrishB how funny, at least it‘s not me misremembering something...🤣 5y
tournevis And! Playdo is in fact the rebranding of cleaning putty. When people transitioned away from coal heating fireplaces ans stoves, they rebranded themselves as a toy. 5y
Lindy @tournevis 😮😮😮Thanks for this update! @TrishB @squirrelbrain 5y
squirrelbrain Well, how interesting @tournevis! Ooh I used to love the smell of Playdo- I wonder if it still smells the same now?! 5y
TrishB @squirrelbrain oh me too! Used to but it for my nieces and nephews just to sniff it!! 5y
tournevis @Lindy @squirrelbrain Sometimes, my PhD is worth something! 5y
squirrelbrain Now I need to know what your PhD was...! 🤣 @tournevis (Probably not Playdo?!) 5y
tournevis @squirrelbrain Historical anthropology 5y
Hooked_on_books I saw this on a tv show once several years ago and they mentioned the Playdoh connection, too. Fascinating! 5y
Lindy @Hooked_on_books @tournevis Yes, it is fascinating. 5y

Six hours in, this audiobook took a sudden swerve into Jane Eyre territory. Didn‘t see that coming.

readordierachel You have me intrigued! 5y

#audiomending : I was annoyed that this rip in my jeans got larger whenever I caught my foot while putting them on. They are wearing thin but they‘re my only pair of blue jeans and I want them to last a little longer.

lahousewyfe Love it! 5y
Caroline2 Awesome idea!!! 😀 5y
Lindy @lahousewyfe Thanks! It's a style of mending called sashiko. 5y
