Making It Up
Making It Up | Penelope Lively
1 post | 3 read | 3 to read
Hailed by critics as a benchmark in a career full of award-winning achievements, Making It Up is Penelope Lively's answer to the oft-asked question, "How much of what you write comes from your own life?" What if Lively hadn't escaped from Egypt, her birthplace, at the outbreak of World War II? What would her life have been like if she'd married someone else? From a hillside in Italy to an archaeological dig, the author explores the stories that could have been hers, fashioning a sublime dance between reality and imagination that confirms her reputation as a singular talent.

Pickpick

Every now and then I come across a collection that reminds me short stories can be just as satisfying as whole novels. This is one of them. Penelope Lively is such a good writer.

CarolynM @Graywacke @JennyM This is the 3rd book of hers I've read. I found a few at a second hand bookshop last year so expect more reviews soon 🙂 3y
Centique Synchronicity! I find myself reading two Penelope Livelys right now. She must have put a spell on me too 😍 3y
Centique I just finished Cleopatras Sister but I didn‘t like the second half very much so I won‘t post a review. The first half was great though - I do love her voice and philosophising (just that the plot went somewhere I hate going) 3y
CarolynM @Centique The second half of that one wasn't easy. It was an interesting contrast to 3y
Centique @CarolynM I bailed on Bel Canto last year when I figured out it had a hostage situation. I‘m just too nervy at the moment for that kind of tension. Put it in the 16th century or on an alien spaceship and I‘d be fine though! I‘ll get back to Bel Canto. 3y
CarolynM @Centique Normally I'd run a mile from that subject matter, but I managed to deal with it in both those books. I think because there was nothing too graphic, not too much drawn out threat and no intention to shock. 3y
