Labor Law for the Rank & Filer
Labor Law for the Rank & Filer: Building Solidarity While Staying Clear of the Law | Staughton Lynd, Daniel Gross
3 posts | 2 read
Blending cutting-edge legal strategies for winning justice at work with a theory of dramatic, bottom-up social change, this practical guide to workers rights aims to make work better while reinvigorating the labor movement. A powerful organization model called solidarity unionism is explained, showing how the labor force can avoid the pitfalls of the legal system and utilize direct action to win fair rights. The new edition includes new cases governing fundamental labor rights and can be used not only by union workers, but can serve as a guerrilla legal handbook for any employee in this unstable economy.

“…In a solidarity union, the worker shares his or her grievance with a committee of co-workers. They decide together on a course of direct action to right the wrong, which the workers will lead. The workers thereby harness their own power and creativity rather than depending on ‘professionals.‘ Business unions sometimes say to members, ‘You are the union.‘ In a solidarity union, that proposition is true.”

Nice lil primer on “hands on” labor law- where to find your main rights as a worker, things you didn‘t know you could get away with, basics on solidarity and organizing. It mentions some notorious court cases and a few other writings that you can look into for more info…some of it is a bit dry, but all the info is clear, useful and to the point. Kinda left me wanting more details on many sections but hey, I get it, can‘t include everything here.

The day before our union was to vote on their best, last final offer (which many would accept but not all) we received a letter from high up telling us to take the offer because if they gave in to our demands they would have to lay people off.

Multiple departs are understaffed. Many people have quit or retired. How can they lay off, or have no money for staff when so so many staff have not been replaced.

Graciouswarriorprincess It doesn‘t make sense! Such a shame. I am sending you hugs! 5y
