God Save the Queens
God Save the Queens: The Essential History of Women in Hip-Hop | Kathy Iandoli
7 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
Cant Stop Wont Stop meets Girls to the Front in this essential and long overdue history of hip-hops female pioneers and its enduring stars. Every history of hip-hop previously published, from Jeff Changs Cant Stop Wont Stop to Shea Serranos The Rap Yearbook, focuses primarily on men, glaringly omitting a thorough and respectful examination of the presence and contribution of the genres female artists. For far too long, women in hip-hop have been relegated to the shadows, viewed as the designated First Lady thrown a contract, a pawn in some beef, or even worse. But as Kathy Iandoli makes clear, the reality is very different. Today, hip-hop is dominated by successful women such as Cardi B and Nicki Minaj, yet there are scores of female artists whose influence continues to resonate. God Save the Queens pays tribute to the women of hip-hopfrom the early work of Roxanne Shante, to hitmakers like Queen Latifah and Missy Elliot, to the superstars of today. Exploring issues of gender, money, sexuality, violence, body image, feuds, objectification and more, God Save the Queens is an important and monumental work of music journalism that at last gives these influential female artists the respect they have long deserved.

I didn't get to read the book this time, but how could I not pop in to join in the playlist-making fun?
This one has many favorite artists of mine, but it's mostly songs I've liked on Spotify in the past year. So there's a mix of recent releases and old favorites. Looking forward to checking out everyone's lists!

A history of women in rap, from early pioneers like Cindy Campbell, Debbie D, Patty Duke, and the Jazzy 5 MCs, to artists like Salt N Pepa, Queen Latifah, Da Bratt, and Lil Kim, up to modern artists like Rapsody and Cardi B. There are things that could‘ve been done better, but for the most part this was a pretty good look at women in a genre that most people associate with men. Covers styles, impact, and legacies.

@Weaponxgirl

SW-T There‘s even a nod to Debbie Harry and her song Rapture. 4y
Weaponxgirl Thanks for the tag! It looks wonderful 4y

This one caught my eye from both the title and the beautiful cover art. I also really love anything related to music so a book detailing the history of women in hip-hop is right up my alley.

Can‘t wait to get my hands on this one!

Music journalist Iandoli traces the difficult road women in hip hop have traveled since the birth of the genre. Her interviews and careful reporting reveal how female artists have been marginalized through lack of compensation, pressure to adopt a hyper-sexualized image, or being pitted against other female rappers in feuds. Some artists still managed to find success; others weren't as lucky, but you can't help but be inspired by their stories.

Cinfhen Cool cover ✊🏼 4y
vivastory I heard Dessa is featured in here. I definitely recommend checking out her solo work & her work in Doomtree. 4y
Billypar @vivastory I don't remember her, but I'm sure I missed a few: I'll have to check her and Doomtree out. I still haven't finished seeking out some of the artists covered in the book - so many great new discoveries from it. 4y

Decent retrospective of women in hip-hop. It was a little uneven and repetitive, too focused on beefs and not enough on beats, but an excellent overview of the impact of women on the genre. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼1/2

vivastory Does it mention Dessa by any chance? 4y
Owlizabeth @vivastory yes! Briefly. 4y
vivastory She's ridiculously talented. Love her work with Doomtree & her solo albums, especially Chimes 4y
