This was the second story collection I read last year, but one of the first I‘ve ever truly connected with in both topics and genre.

I‘d love to see some of these turn into either full novels or adaptations - there was so many instances of beautifully creepy imagery that it‘d be great to see how someone interpreted it for the screen.

Celie‘s story has stuck with me far beyond my first read and many viewings of the movie. I loved following a character find pieces of herself throughout life and grow stronger as an individual.

I can‘t believe it‘s taken me so long to add it to my personal library. But with such a beautiful cover, I couldn‘t pass up the opportunity for a spur of the moment buy ... even if I‘m trying to cut down 🙈

This book was on my TBR for a little while and I expected to enjoy it when I finally read it, but I didn‘t expect how much it would wreck me in terms of connecting to a character trying to figure out their life and identity - in this case a queer identity.

Much like Riot Baby, I‘m still processing my feelings before I let words hit the page, but this is definitely the most connected I‘ve felt to a story so far this year.

LiteraryinLititz Wow, it sounds like a really powerful book. Thanks for putting it on my radar! 1d

I‘m trying to expand my reading outside of solely fiction, and this one caught my eye not just from the beautiful cover, but the combination of autobiography and magical realism.

In all of the rereads I‘ve done of the Harry Potter series, I‘ve always wondered what it‘d be like to have a story focused on a black wizard - now it looks like I might finally get that answer!

This cover is everything middle & high school me wanted in my fantasy books!

Considering the fact that the only fantasy books I‘d ever read until recently mainly featured white characters in the forefront, it makes my heart so happy to see faces that look like mine appearing on more and more fantasy covers as the stars of their own stories. I can‘t wait to meet Bree and explore this world when this is released!

Today‘s #firstlinesfriday comes from Tar Baby

This will most likely be my next Toni Morrison book, unless I get to Beloved first.

Just from this opening line and the premise, I know I‘ll be in for a beautifully written and emotional ride.

I‘m still collecting my thoughts, but I can‘t say enough great things about this! Everything about it was beautifully done - the relationship between Ella & Kev was sweet and touching, and although painful to somewhat relive those particular events, it was such an interesting way to describe someone internalizing emotion.

This was my first read by Tochi Onyebuchi and it definitely won‘t be the last!

This is one of the first books I remember having an immediate connection to the main character and being completely drawn into the story, making it one of my favorite reads when I was younger despite the tougher topics.

It‘s been a while since I‘ve read it, but I‘ve never really forgotten about Cassie Logan and her family. I will definitely be giving this a much needed reread before I jump into the others.

Today‘s pick for #bookquotewednesday comes from She Would Be King

This stuck out to me because it reminded me of all of the Black historical figures I never learned about in school and am just now finding through either newly published books or movies.

While its awful that such rich history is either glossed over, edited or just never mentioned, I‘m grateful to be able to learn these things on my own with new resources.

This wasn‘t really on my radar until I spotted it on the shelf, but what I‘ve read so far, from the jacket to the first few pages, really grabbed my attention. I look forward to actually having the time to sit down and dig a little deeper into these stories.

January Wrap-up 📚

What a coincidence the first 3 books I read this year would all be centered on the topic of murder cases and the death penalty. Two were actual accounts, while the third was a fictional imagining, but I enjoyed each of them for different reasons.

This was a pretty good start, given the few time constraints I had this month, and I can‘t wait to get started on this next group of reads!

The shortest read I‘ve done so far this year ... but also the sweetest ☺️

This was my first encounter with Charlie Macksey‘s work and I loved every minute of it - it gave me all the feelings I got when I read Winnie the Pooh and The Little Prince for the first time.

Definitely adding this to my collection as soon as I can!

These were great reads. I learned a lot about capital murder cases and the death penalty, which really made me stop and think about my own feelings and if I‘ve changed my mind on my position. It definitely put things into perspective that not all cases are black and white, especially when there may be some foul play behind the scenes, so I‘m glad that I got accounts from both sides.

Stumbled upon one of my all-time favorite books on a bookstore run today ... maybe this is where I started to gravitate towards fairy tale retellings?

As an added bonus, the graphic designer in me LOVES the page design and typography in this - so much fun to flip through and see how far they took the tiniest details!😍

When picking books to fulfill wedding rhyme prompts, I only knew that I wanted to try and fill them in with all black authors. Now having read them, I noticed that they all deal with sharing knowledge and aspects of a particular culture. They‘re also split up down the middle by keeping aspects of culture and retellings in a new form.

I might not be able to plan this again with future challenges, but this tiny coincidence was nice. 😊

I‘m so glad I gave this a chance. Although following Jerome on his journey was heartbreaking and felt too close to home in terms of the reality we live in today, the addition of having him interact with not only Emmett Till and other victims of race-related violence, but the daughter of the officer that took his life gave this a new perspective.

Much like The Hate U Give and Dear Martin, this was such an important read, just in a tinier package.

I usually don‘t so short stories, but this collection was much more my speed. Reading through this felt like watching mini episodes of Black Mirror and I wouldn‘t mind seeing some of them expanded into full novels. Imagery and the atmospheres created in each story are also beautifully done!

Highlights: The Finkelstein 5, The Era, Lark Street, Zimmer Land, Friday Black & Light Spitter

bookladyreads I was curious about this book. I'm not really into short stories and I kept adding and removing this book from my tbr. Perhaps I'll give it a try. 5mo

August Wrap-up 📚

One book short of repeating last month due to some timing issues, but I still got some pretty good titles in. On the bright side, I think I‘ve finally got back in habit of knocking a book out in one night (even if I lose some sleep in the process 🙈). Hoping to keep this going for the rest of the year! 🤞🏾

From the very first lines I was completely locked in. The pacing was great, although it felt a tad slow at first - but when it picked up, I was not at all prepared for the directions it took!

I got so lost in the story and the characters that I was so sad to see this end. Luckily the sequel is around the corner so I don‘t have to wait too long for more Jane & Katherine.

I stumbled across this one on a bookstore run and it caught my attention from the paper doll inspired cover.

This was a beautifully written love letter to nerd culture. I loved getting a look into Cameron‘s thought process as she was creating her costumes - the description of those moments made it feel like I was watching her putting together each piece. The inclusion of the comics was also a nice touch.
