A Gentleman's Position
A Gentleman's Position: A Society of Gentlemen Novel | K.J. Charles
9 posts | 14 read | 9 to read
Power, privilege, and the rigid rules of class leave two hearts yearning for connection in the sizzling new Society of Gentlemen novel from K. J. Charles. Among his eccentric though strictly principled group of friends, Lord Richard Vane is the confidant on whom everyone depends for advice, moral rectitude, and discreet assistance. Yet when Richard has a problem, he turns to his valet, a fixer of unparalleled geniusand the object of Richards deepest desires. If there is one rule a gentleman must follow, it is never to dally with servants. But when David is close enough to touch, the rules of class collide with the basest sort of animal instinct: overpowering lust. For David Cyprian, burglary and blackmail are as much in a days work as bootblackinganything for the man hes devoted to. But the one thing he wants for himself is the one thing Richard refuses to give: his heart. With the tension between them growing to be unbearable, Davids seemingly incorruptible master has left him no choice. Putting his finely honed skills of seduction and manipulation to good use, he will convince Richard to forget all about his well-meaning objections and give in to sweet, sinful temptation. Gosh, I inhaled this one. Just... all in one go. I love David Cyprian, and Richard's an idiot, but a principled one which makes me warm to him. I cannot honestly complain about a thing in this book.

#friyayintro time.

1. Nothing firm. Probably read a lot? Maybe hang out with a dog?
2. I loved it soooooo much, y'all. Soooooo much.
3. Onions. You keep that crap out of my food unless it's COMPLETELY melted down.
4. I played softball for a little while when I was a kid. These days, I'm trying to become a runner.

I kind of want to type !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! until Litsy tells me I've hit the character limit, because WOW. Charles takes two guys who're desperately in love with one another, establishes that their relationship CANNOT work due to the power imbalance between them, and proceeds to show us how they negotiate their way around every challenge their differing classes, and personalities, present. I could hardly bear to put it down.

Black cherry ice cream + MOAR KJ CHARLES.

I'm gonna be so sad when I finish this series. Thank goodness I've stockpiled three other books for my KJ Charles-a-thon and can borrow three more from the library. I MIGHT pause for a Courtney Milan break after this one, though, just to add another voice to this socially aware historical romance binge of mine.

Mitch Black 🍒 ice cream....now that sounds yum! 6y

Yesssssss everything KJ Charles writes is like catnip for me. Class differences! Amazing historical accuracy! Reappearances from characters from earlier books! Queerness! Seriously. Queerness everywhere. What a mood improver. 😊

It's a rainy day in Singapore so I felt like having soup for lunch. One of my favorite local dishes is fish soup! Here's today's #bookandlunch featuring a M/M historical novel that I bought when it went on sale, because it was recommended by @meandmybooks . It's going to be my first M/M historical read when the time comes.

KJ Charles hit it out of the park with her historical m/m romance series Society of Gentlemen. The series wraps up in A Gentleman's Position and I therefore wouldn't recommend it as a starting point, but the trilogy is well worth reading. I enjoyed the focus on issues of agency and appreciated that both characters have their own sort of power, even if they're not of equal social standing.

Bless Sarah MacLean's column in the Washington Post for introducing me to this gem.

Nuanced and pleasingly steamy, it tackles issues of sexuality, class, position, and power in Regency England. Easy enough to follow without reading the rest of the series, but I'd bet they're worth the read.
