First-generation American LatinX Liliana Cruz does what it takes to fit in at her new nearly all-white school. But when family secrets spill out and racism at school ramps up, she must decide what she believes in and take a stand. Liliana Cruz is a hitting a wallor rather, walls. Theres the wall her mom has put up ever since Lilianas dad leftagain. Theres the wall that delineates Lilianas diverse inner-city Boston neighborhood from Westburg, the wealthyand whitesuburban high school shes just been accepted into. And theres the wall Liliana creates within herself, because to survive at Westburg, she cant just lighten up, she has to whiten up. So what if she changes her name? So what if she changes the way she talks? So what if shes seeing her neighborhood in a different way? But then light is shed on some hard truths: It isnt that her father doesnt want to come homehe cantand her whole family is in jeopardy. And when racial tensions at school reach a fever pitch, the walls that divide feel insurmountable. But a wall isnt always a barrier. It can be a foundation for something better. And Liliana must choose: Use this foundation as a platform to speak her truth, or risk crumbling under its weight.

This really resonated with me as just yesterday I was told several times that I‘m “too much”.

Personally I know that says more about them than me but it still gave me pause because I hear it so often.

What are you sick of hearing?

dabbe “You're so lucky to be retired.“

I know I am, but I also worked hard for it and gave up many vacations to pay off our house. Plus, what I'd really like to say (but don't) is that being retired also means that I'm closer to the grave than they are. 😃

SamAnne @dabbe same! I flamed out on my activist vocation planning to pivot and then got diagnosed with cancer (in remission for now!). I‘m not ready to retire…just have had a long space of not working. Pivot again, pivote again! 6mo
dabbe @SamAnne I didn't know that! I will keep thinking good thoughts that it will be #remissionforever! 🖤🧡🖤 6mo

Sharpeipup @samanne wishing you continued remission! Life often feels like a series of pivots. 6mo
Sharpeipup @dabbe congratulations on your retirement and paying off your house. Both are noteworthy achievements to be proud of. 6mo

Liliana just got into a new school in Boston. Only one issue: it‘s mostly white people. And to add to the pressure, her dad got deported and is trying to sneak back into the US. This is an unfortunately necessary book right now dealing with racism and white supremacy. Loved the cover art on this (featuring Daisy!)

I really found Liliana annoying bc of the way she spoke (slang, teen-speak) but she grew on me. The story starts off slow but then turns into a discussion on race where Liliana learns about her roots and how even as Latinx, there are things about being poc that even she doesn't know, which was very relatable. It's a story that made me think of how I grew up and where I am now
