Case of the Deadly Butter Chicken
Case of the Deadly Butter Chicken | Tarquin Hall
6 posts | 17 read | 10 to read
Now featuring mouthwatering recipes from the Vish Puri family kitchen, this installment in Tarquin Hall s mystery series offers a taste of India alongside the thrill of a rich and fulfilling whodunit mystery. Dubbed a wonderfully engaging P.I. ("The Times," London), Tarquin Hall s irresistible protagonist Vish Puri has become an international favorite through a series that splendidly evokes the color and bustle of Delhi and the tang of contemporary India ("Seattle Times"). Now the gormandizing, spectacularly mustachioed sleuth finds himself facing down his greatest fears in an explosive case involving the Indian and Pakistani mafias. When the elderly father of a top Pakistani cricketer playing in a new multimillion-dollar cricket league dies frothing at the mouth during a post-match dinner, it s not a simple case of Delhi Belly. His butter chicken has been poisoned. To solve the case, Puri must penetrate the region s organized crime, following a trail that leads deep into Pakistan the country in which many members of the P.I. s family were massacred during the 1947 partition of India. The last piece of the puzzle, however, turns up closer to home when Puri learns of the one person who can identify the killer. Unfortunately it is the one person in the world with whom he has sworn never to work: his Mummy-ji. With riotously entertaining prose, a boisterous cast of characters, and a pitch-perfect sense of place, Tarquin Hall has crafted a gripping whodunit that takes us deep into Indian history and society. He brings a hugely appealing culture to life with all its sights, sounds, smells, foods, and complexity. As the title implies, "The Case of the Deadly Butter Chicken" is a succulent read by a writer at the top of his game."

I like this series for the potrayal of its characters as much as for the food tour of India. The mystery in this was approached from 2 angles - one from Puri's and the other from his always delightful mummy-ji. This book highlighted a part of Partition history which I had no knowledge of - which were the Indian women who saved the abductees from across the newly created border.

The stories (A and B) intertwined perfectly together. Past and present merged. Vish Puri takes us into the belly of Delhi and we get a tiny piece of how life goes and how past history still has a hold on every day life. What I liked most about this third novel is that it taught me things I had no idea about, Partition history, and made me want to read more about it.

A really fun mystery series set in India. Vish Puri fancies himself as the Indian Holmes. #seasonreadings2016 #silhouettesoncovers

This series is so fun. I adore mysteries set in other countries. This has enough interesting characters and cultural details to make it stand out. After spending a week vacation with a group of friends and not getting any time to read a single book, I needed to jump start my TBR again. This was a quick and fun one to get me back in track. I am planning to be a shut in this weekend to catch back up. And I can't wait!

Love this series when I'm in the mood for an easy, cozy mystery. Love the Indian setting (Delhi) and the characters. This particular one delves a bit into more serious topics like the history of violence during Partition between India/Pakistan, but the overall vibe of the series is generally fun and lighthearted.

RealLifeReading I've just started on the first book! So interesting! 8y
