Good Morning, Destroyer of Men's Souls
Good Morning, Destroyer of Men's Souls: A Memoir of Women, Addiction, and Love | Nina Renata Aron
11 posts | 9 read | 15 to read
A scorching memoir of a love affair with an addict, weaving personal reckoning with psychology and history to understand the nature of addiction, codependency, and our appetite for obsessive love. "The disease he has is addiction," Nina Renata Aron writes of her boyfriend, K. "The disease I have is loving him." Their love affair was dramatic, urgent, overwhelming--an intoxicating antidote to the long, lonely days of early motherhood. But soon after they get together, K starts using again, and years of relapses and broken promises follow. Even as his addiction deepens, she stays, convinced she is the one who can get him sober. If she leaves him, has she failed? After an adolescence marred by family trauma and addiction, Nina can't help but feel responsible for those suffering around her. How can she break this pattern?Written in prose at once unflinching and acrobatic, Aron delivers a piercing memoir of romance and addiction, drawing on intimate anecdote as well as academic research to crack open the long-feminized and overlooked phenomenon of codependency. She shifts between visceral, ferocious accounts of her affair with K and introspective analysis of the part she plays in his addictions, as well as defining moments in the history of codependency, from temperance to the formation of Al-Anon to more recent research in the psychology of addiction. Good Morning, Destroyer of Men's Souls is a blazing, big-hearted book, one that illuminates and adds nuance to the messy tethers between femininity, enabling, and love.

This is a memoir that maps the pain of addiction, from a loved ones point of view. It was so tragic, and lovely and absolutely beautifully written.

I would recommend this book for anyone who has ever loved an addict.

Mehso-so

An audiobook about codependency, in which the author, a mother of two, leaves her husband to reunite with an ex who struggles with addiction. Honestly, I had less empathy for the author than I normally do when reading memoirs and I‘m not sure what that says about me. I have little patience for people who continue to put themselves (and their children!) in these situations, though I‘m realizing it is part of the issue some women face.

I know I have shared this before but I loved it so much I want everyone to read it. Her writing is amazing and her analysis of codependency is good.

"Every relationship is a kind of world-making, and the one we'd said we wanted to make at the beginning wasn't the one we made."

Eggs I‘m intrigued!!! 3y

So excited for this one because I LOVED this book about codependency, addiction, and relationships. Aron's writing is gorgeous and gives a lot to think about. A great simplistic cover, and a killer title also.

Got in a great start of just under 4hrs for #NovelNovember, while snuggling little man Totes, and working on my tiger painting. I‘m SO close to finishing it, but had to leave the last hour to two for tomorrow. I‘m too sleepy to stay up any longer, but at least I‘ll be all ready for tomorrow‘s overnight shift.

I know we shouldn‘t judge a book by it‘s cover… but judging it by its title is fine, right? Good Morning, Destroyer Of Men‘s Souls is a corker. It is also an incredible, unflinching account of a life of co-dependency, what it's like to be the one who loves an addict. A must-read for fans of Kate Holden, Cheryl Strayed, and Susannah Cahalan. Catching up! I finished this a couple of days ago and I was blown away. The writing is raw and beautiful.
Nina is a very privileged White Woman, and she is aware of this.
The book talks about the history of AA, and weaves this and other addiction and codependency books and research with her own struggle. Her story brings a humanity to addiction and codependency stories that feels needed.
And seriously? This title? Fabulous.
