Such Kindness: A Novel | Andre Dubus III

The author reads this book & it adds an extra element of connection for me to the story. His voice & accent sound like any of my next-door neighbors or friends who might be down on their luck. Tom, a man who has struggled since he‘s lost his wife and construction company due to a fall off a roof, is in constant pain and yet tries to help his neighbors while staying off opioids. Tom was definitely someone I rooted for and felt close to.

BarbaraBB Great review. I haven‘t read him in a long time but loved House of Sand and Fog in the 90s (I think) and read more of his books afterwards. 9h
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I can‘t remember if I‘ve read any of his other books. But now I‘m gonna have to track some down. 9h

The ending felt very unsatisfying. The whole book I felt like the ending was going to involve divorce, but the ending didn‘t even involve a proper ending or closure. This book is funny in the way of a Troost book, but it had a much darker tone because, ultimately, this is his addiction and recovery memoir. It‘s actually heartbreaking in some ways, and it‘s hard to put my finger on exactly why.

GingerAntics I honestly wish there was one more Troost book after this one (this is the last he published), just to have that happy, goofy, inquisitive feeling of the first two books in this trilogy, and to know how things turned out. #JMaartenTroost #HeadhunstersOnMyDoorstep #addiction #recovery #alcoholism #audiobook 3d
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury yes, very different tone to the first two. I have mixed feelings here. The ending was almost just “well, the deadline is in five minutes and I have to attach it to the email first.” Did that happen in his little one bedroom or efficiency apartment or at home with his wife and children? Who knows? We may never know. I really hope it‘s the latter. 3d

5feet.of.fury @GingerAntics yeah he seems to have fallen off the map entirely after this (&there was@supposed to be another book) The opening of this book is amazing. His wife was such a trooper too (hiking on remote islands heavily pregnant, etc) so you just know he was putting her through it. 3d
GingerAntics @5feet.of.fury I love how she said if he ever drank again she‘d make him a eunuch. 🤣😂🤣 that makes me think she probably didn‘t divorce him… but then he ran away from home. I don‘t know. Last updated bio I saw say he lived with his wife and 2 sons in California. 3d
Bookwormjillk I wish there was another book too. I enjoyed these. 3d

I loved every minute of this memoir. You pull so hard for Lara and although she makes many major mistakes, she is so relatable. I wish her all the very best!

Loving an addict and being co-dependent are the main topics of Nina‘s story.
She has a sister who was an addict and has a long term relationship with a man who is an addict. She never admits that she herself is an alcoholic she does mention getting sober though and going to meeting. She focuses on her co-dependency.
Interesting look at the non-addict side. Worth the time.

Nina‘s story of loving an addict. Not sure if by the end of this book she realizes she‘s an addict as well, I hope she does.
A lot of references to AA and the beginning of that organization. Which makes sense when talking about addiction.
So far it‘s interesting, a lot of repetitive stuff though. Writing is good.

All Fall Down: A Novel | Jennifer Weiner

This was my rescue (I guess my sister bought it for Kindle) when I ran out of books on the plane and the flight left at 23:15. I have mixed feelings about Jennifer Weiner's writing but found this quite enjoyable. I could relate somewhat to her difficult child and financial worries though my situation was never that bad. I did want to throttle her while she was in denial and thinking she was so much better than others, though.

2-7-25: My 11th book of 2025! The Blue sisters started out as a foursome, Avery the lawyer, Bonnie the boxer, Lucky the model and the youngest Nicky. After the loss of one, the other three must come to terms with their grief both separately and together. When their parents decide it is time to sell their NYC apartment, the sisters must come together to empty the place and say goodbye to their lost sister. Moving, sad, uplifting.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣1️⃣1️⃣

Another graphic memoir hit! This time from comic Julia Wertz who documents her life in NYC as a recovering alcoholic and self proclaimed “weirdo”. She‘s super relatable (as a fellow weirdo) with the difficult social interactions and I loved her “urban exploring” (investigating abandoned buildings) adventures! Wertz also describes the horrible dating scene and some close friendship. I really enjoyed this read..though parts were sad it was hopeful.
