Black Widow: A Jack Parlabane Thriller | Christopher Brookmyre
7 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
There is no perfect marriage. There is no perfect murder. From Scottish crime master Christopher Brookmyre, "Black Widow" tells the potent story of a woman who thought she was too late for love, the man who falls for her ambition, and the secret selves that are poised, at any moment, to end everything. Diana Jager is clever, strong, and successful, a skilled surgeon and fierce campaigner via her blog about sexism in medicine. Yet it takes only hours for her life to crumble when her personal details are released on the internet as revenge for her writing. Then she meets Peter. He is kind, generous, and knows nothing about her pastthe second chance she's been waiting for. Within six months, they are married. Within six more, Peter is dead in a road accident, a nightmare end to their fairy-tale romance. But Peter's sister Lucy doesn't believe in fairy tales, and tasks rogue reporter Jack Parlabane with discovering the dark truth behind the woman the media is calling the Black Widow. Still on the mend from his own relationship wounds after a turbulent divorce, Jack's investigation into matters of the heart takes him to hidden places no one should ever have to go."

I don‘t recall where I got this rec but i enjoyed this detective novel! Might read more of the series. It‘s set in Scotland and the narration was great, rly brought the plot to life. If you ignore the detective bit (there‘s some backstory and info on his life and such) it‘s as good as any modern domestic thriller out there. Solid read.

A far more conventional psychological crime mystery than his earlier stuff, which is not to say that this isn't an excellent read. The mystery revolves around whether surgeon Diana Jager topped her husband, and it's told partly in Diana's voice and partly from Parlablane's POV. It reminded me slightly of Liane Moriarty in books like The Husband's Secret, which can't be bad.

MicheleinPhilly Have not heard of this author or series but have stacked the first! 4y

As I gaze from the dock and take in all the faces gazing back, I think of the opinions they have formed, the hateful things they have written and said. I think of how once it stung but my skin has grown thicker over time, and I have worse things to endure now than mere words.

This latest installment of Christopher Brookmyre's Jack Parlabane series releases next Tuesday (Nov 2st). It's my first read of his (but definitely won't be the last) and can easily be read as a stand alone. The writing, pacing, and suspense is well done. I thought I knew where the story was headed about a third in. I did -- and I didn't!!! Even convinced that I did, I couldn't stop reading. So good.

Magpiegem Ooh that's a good review. It's going straight on my list! Thank you 😊 8y

Hey netgalley users! I'm completely addicted to all the delicious goodness on this site. But, it's a little like library holds, when the approvals come in they seem to happen all at once and I'm drowning in books (in the best possible way 🙂) Have any of you gleaned any method to the madness of how/when/what criteria the publishers make their decisions?

#netgalley

Alfoster Oh, so agree! No clue! Would love to hear from others! I have 9 waiting on my shelf and I'm reading as fast as I can! Some auto-approved me..why? Just know I love good free books! 8y
LectricSheep This doesn't answer your question, but I read The White City and felt it was the *worst* book I'd read all year. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. 8y
Kazen Each publisher is so different, I've given up trying to grok them all! Also, within publishers different publicists may do approvals so you never really know. It's part of the fun, though! 😊 8y

Well-ReadNeck @LectricSheep I agree with your assessment. Nothing really happens and no one is likable. 😕 8y
LectricSheep Thank you! I feel vindicated. 8y
