While the plot made this a fast read too many things disturbed me, like heroine used as bait. The author owns it but then repeats it, grah. The love/trust triangle is both predictable and perplexing, and the world building is weak.
All that being said the book let me escape from the real world for a few hours, so not all bad.
When I grow old I would love to be like the main character Morayo - living on her own but not lonely, with a history but not tied too tightly to her past. She always does something daring around her birthday (this year it's getting a tattoo) but a fall and entering assisted living changes things.
It's rare to find a book that combines issues like aging, friendship, and race this well - a (mini) Tales of the City for our times. #goldsmithsprize
I'm so tempted to do this now! What characters on your shelf should talk together?
I think Mercy Thompson (Moon Called, etc.) and Makina from Signs Preceding the End of the World would get along splendidly.
This is totally the wrong book to read on public transit... 😨😱😖

What, you don't read between innings? ⚾📖⚾📖⚾
(Yokohama Baystars vs Tokyo Giants, League Championship Series)
A long day working at the hospital, but I still managed to read this mystery near some Do Not Cross tape (of sorts ;)

(Kitty shelf pose, take two)
Thankfully the shelf is not a stunt but a device to hang all kinds of bookish thoughts off of. Rose talks about women and fiction, how physical books aren't the end all be all, how libraries decide what to keep and what to cut (it can be painful, guys).
A welcome addition to any #booksonbooks shelf.
Detective fiction set in all kinds of places. What would you add?

My first foray into #serialreader! What time do you guys have your deliveries set for? I went with 3pm but it feels like a weird time 😕
Suzu does her best shelf impression with tonight's read. Close, but...
#HelloOctober
A nice way to say #HelloOctober - a 700+ page #classic from 1945! Not sure if I'll get to it this weekend but it's tempting all the same 😃
This is my afternoon and I'm liking it. Good book, healthy breeze, hot tea. Also raised my chair up as high as it will go and am sitting cross-legged on top - feeling daring! 💃
I'm so excited about the #goldsmithsprize #shortlist , rewarding fiction that "breaks the mold". They all look so good! One in hand, two on hold (↑), one requested, two not out in the US yet (drat). Full shortlist: http://www.gold.ac.uk/goldsmiths-prize/
Book mail is the best mail! This beauty was crammed into my mail slot but doesn't seem to be suffering any ill effects #phew
Hello Litsy!
I can't think of a better book to start with - African-American women! Space! Science!! #HiddenFigures gets all my love.
