Sick with the flu (yes I got tested, no it‘s not covid), but finished reading this. At first was wowed, then as the story progressed I felt Stross doesn‘t quite know how to give life to the first person narrator main character. Still, quite good and the extra short story “The Concrete Jungle” was promising.

Don't get my wrong, I enjoyed this book. I loved the concept, the environment and the characters. My only issue with it was all the jargon. I studied computer programing back in school but you're talking over 10 years ago now 🙈 this isn't a bad thing, the author is clearly passionate but I had trouble keeping up sometimes. I'm glad i did this on audio.

I think I'm gonna enjoy this series 😊

When you and the husband decide to read the same book at the same time. Rare thing :) and for now he's ahead of me (co-worker in the bus I had to be socialising)

I listened to this book on Audible and I think that is where I may have gone wrong. At about 3 hours from the end I finally got my head around the backstory and could fully be absorbed into the world but up until that point I constantly felt I was not quite keeping up with every detail. If I had read it I'm sure I would have been able to take more in. It was very clever and humorous but I'm not sure I'll continue with the series.

This Cthulhu-meets-James-Bond story has a good premise and I enjoyed it, but it's an obvious first effort. Two shorter stories were welded together, and the seams show. I will give the next book a try, however. Lovecraft fans should give it a chance.

A general recommendation for the Laundry series. The basic premise of this series is that the Cthulhu like alien monsters from other dimensions exist and they are attracted by mathematics. Before computers this threat was controllable, but in the computer age incursions are becoming more common.
