I would use this book to talk to my students about emotions. While observing in my previous and current classroom placements, I have noticed emotional regulation is one of the biggest challenges I see students struggling with. I would also use this to educate students about overcoming challenges.

A motherless girl and adopted dog find friendship in small town Florida. We own many DiCamillo books but this may be my favourite, perhaps as we are currently caring for a large, smelly, old lab who also smiles with all his teeth. The cast of characters is wonderful. Trix believes books pose a problem, then solve it - of course the mother would return - but was content when Opal‘s loneliness was assuaged by her new friendships.

My last post, It's been a great March. I didn't read all the books I planed, but I read quite a few.

5⭐ A Single Shard 12th century Korea.
Another orphan story I loved.

4.5⭐ Because of Winn-Dixie
What's better than a book about an orphaned kid? an orphaned dog. A great story of how Winn-Dixie helps Opal make friends in a new town.

4 ⭐ The Storm in the Barn 1937
Enjoyable graphic novel of dust bowl Kansas.

This Newbery award winning novel follows the story about a girl and her dog, Winn-Dixie. This modern fantasy story would make for a great author‘s study on beloved storyteller Kate Dicamillo. UDL principles 2.4 and 3.1. ESOL strategies #4 and #29. #ucflae3414sp21

This Rf, Newberry award winner is a classic story that I would recommend to everyone. The story is about a young girl in Florida who adopts a dog who ends up having a huge impact on her life. This book could be a great source for an independent read. Students could take notes on each chapter to create an overall summary that they can look back on after they finish the book.

Emiranda https://www.readingrockets.org/news/digital-note-taking-strategies-deepen-studen... EL 9 is used in this strategy as the students are being exposed to new note taking strategies. UDL 1.1 is being offered as they are given choices to pick new note taking strategies 4y

Why haven‘t I read this sweet, sad story before?! I don‘t like dogs, so maybe that held me back. But this was exactly what I needed. Go read this book; I‘ll wait.

Finally got a #bookspinbingo , and my screen-induced headache has eased a bit. Hooray for MG-sized print!

I‘ve been working on Lies My Teacher Told Me, but I have to do it in spurts because it‘s an ebook and the screen is hard on my eyes. I finished the chapter Gone With the Wind, about history textbooks making racism invisible. Then I turned to the tagged book to relieve my eye strain, and here we have a librarian recommending Gone With the Wind. Interesting.

My podcast is back from a brief holiday break — and on the first episode of 2021, my guest and i are chatting about Because of Winn-Dixie! We chat about the book‘s colorful cast of characters, charming setting, and general sweetness. We talk about pet personalities and i gush about my dog. We discuss the book‘s focus on empathy and the moments we felt the empathy may have gone too far (bear with us!). 🎧🐶 Link to listen in my bio!

Why did I wait so long to read this book. What a simple but beautifully heartfelt story of a little girl and her dog. I also love how this shows that friendship has no age limit. Everyone needs a friend. Sometimes we just have to open our hearts.
