Another example of why I need to read at least one Toni Morrison book a year.

This was a most thought provoking short story, the only one Morrison ever wrote, and the introduction by Zadie Smith was excellent. The concept of writing a story without racial coding about two characters of different race, for whom race is vital, makes for a very interesting reading experience. Morrison's writing can't be beat, and I loved the ending.

This was a phenomenal story! And the introduction by Zadie Smith was outstanding as well. Pro tip: definitely read the introduction AFTER the story.

Brilliant. Morrison once described this story as “an experiment in the removal of all racial codes from a narrative about two characters of different races for whom racial identity is crucial.” Would make a great book group pick. Excellent intro by Zadie Smith.
