Jane Austen
Jane Austen: Her Life, Her Times, Her Novels | Janet Todd
10 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
Over the last 200 years, the novels of Jane Austen have been loved and celebrated across a diverse international readership. As a result, there is a bottomless appetite for detail about the woman behind the writing. Jane Austen traces her life and times; her relationships with family and friends; the attitudes and customs of the time that shaped her and were in turn shaped by her work; and the places where she lived, worked and set her novels, from rural Hampshire to fashionable Bath Spa. Chapters on each of her novels run throughout the book and place them in the context of her life. For such a renowned novelist, there is remarkably little direct material available, but this volume draws on archives for a truly insightful view.

I really liked this book with all its pictures of Jane‘s family, paintings of the places she lived, paintings from her time to illustrate her time. In addition to all this the book also include funny memorabilia for any Austen fan. The only thing I missed was some more analysis of the novels, but this book is too thin for that and doesn‘t pretend that it will do it either

My first book finished for #MakeMeReadIt.

AnneCecilie This is also my first book finished for #13in13 @Samplergal I bought this book 3,5 yrs ago so it definitely qualifies for the #MountTBRChallenge too @DivaDiane 6y

Just had to share this painting, Netley Abbey by Moonlight, from the book. It‘s painted in 1833 by John Constable.

This is probably what Catherine expected would meet her when she visited friends in Northanger Abbey

A picture from the book.

Wonder if this bookstore still exists in London, “Temple of the Muses” in Finsbury Square?

Mitch Afraid not...burnt down in 1840ish I think! Hatchards of Piccadilly though was a contemporary and is still open for business! 6y
AnneCecilie @Mitch I was afraid something like that had happened. If I visit London again, I‘ll see if I can get Hatchards on the list. 6y

I saw this and had to join in. I‘d say definitely I‘m a Fanny. Not so sure about the Emma. Here is the link if anyone else wants to give it a go.

A fun book with great paintings and ephemera in pockets/envelopes throughout. Nothing new revealed but a nice presentation of information.
