Because of You | Pip Harry
Pickpick

Absolutely adored this beautifully tender novel. It is touching, poignant yet ultimately hopeful with important messages about compassion, acceptance and equality. This is an honest and much needed glimpse into the way we as society treat our most vulnerable, exploring poverty and privilege, gentrification, addiction, the cruelty of defensive architecture, mental illness, equality and the power of story-telling to both shape and change lives.

Broadcast | Liam Brown

‘Broadcast‘ is a dark and unsettling look at the near future of social media that explores the perils and pitfalls of internet fame. This is such a chilling page-turner that is super easy to devour in one sitting. Fast-paced, fun and taught with tension, featuring an unlikeable protagonist and a compelling plot, this is, on the whole, a sinister and relevant take on social media culture and the ethical implications of technology on society.

Libretto_Reviews I am reading it right now and sometimes I must admit, I am a bit ashamed for how social media people is depicted. We all look like a bunch of idiots! 7y

A contemp/romance set in Sydney about working out who you are and what you want from life. There‘s something very relatable about the emotions in this book, but I found it difficult to connect with the characters and story. The short, choppy alternating POV chapters are frustrating, lacking in distinct voices to define each character and it suffers from instalove syndrome. The secondary cast is solid though. Sweet but best suited to contemp fans.

Maybe controversial given all the hate I've seen on the Internet but I enjoyed this a lot. I feel like it would be phenomenal to see on stage. Scorpius is literally a cinnamon bun of delight. I though it was fun and nostalgic and had some truly beautiful moments that remind me why I love this world.

Not a win for me. While its marketed as science fiction/dystopia it's ACTUALLY just a cover for yet another YA instalove romance. There are a lot of plot holes and the overall concept of immortality was to implausible for me. Sorry. Lovely cover though.

Way Down Dark: Australia | James P. Smythe

A dark, gritty and brutal dystopia. The plot is a bit predictable and recognisable but the world building and atmosphere are well done. The author really knows how to create tension and unease in the story and keep you on the edge of your seat.

A truly beautiful contemporary. This is such a quintessential Aussie book, capturing the vibe of coastal life and days spent salty and sunburnt in the surf. It is definitely a slow burn, thought provoking, contemplative and emotionally nuanced, rich in ideas delivered with a vulnerability and sensitivity that hits straight for the heart.

I would only recommend this to fans of Stitching Snow. While both standalone novels are in different worlds they are recognisably similar in setting and style. Unfortunately this fairytale retelling didn't work as well for me, I just didn't like the concept and found elements of the storytelling frustrating and tedious. Still a solid read just not a standout.

A fun Snow White retelling set to a space opera backdrop. Kick ass main character, fast paced plot, plenty of action, solidly written with intriguing world building. I really enjoyed this standalone.

I. Give. Up. I just can't do it. I've been so determined to get to the end but it's just not worth the struggle. Unpopular opinion, maybe, but this is such a weak and boring sequel I just don't get the love. Overhype alert. Oh well. Can't win them all I 'spose.

The_Little_Librarian @allthewrittenworlds I felt the same way! The whole time I was reading it I wondered what all the fuss was about. But the last chapter does hook you in if you ever finish it! 8y
allthewrittenworlds I still want to get there so I might have another go in a bit! Yeah I've heard a lot of chatter about something big at the end which has me curious. 8y
forlifesnotaparagraph Agreed! I enjoyed Red Queen and was so disappointed with Glass Sword. 8y

Awriterspenandpaper I couldn't even get to the sequel as I didn't finish the first book. Couldn't get into the hype of it and hated the "hunger game" Esk that it had. 8y
TheBookbabeblog84 I thought I was the only one! I was excited to see where the story went but it was HORRIBLE! I did not really find the first book that great either but at least I finished it. 8y
DGRachel I'm so happy to see this review. I'm 100 pages in and struggling to keep going. Now I don't feel so bad about bailing. 8y

A darkly intriguing paranormal urban fantasy that edges into the mystery/crime thriller genres. An entertaining and wild ride full of adrenaline charged fight scenes, non-stop action and a whole lot of mystery. It‘s an easy read, fast paced and containing some fairly epic twists and turns. Fun.

Part crime thriller and part paranormal mystery. This book kept me guessing. In classic ‘whodunit‘ style Dark skilfully leads the reader on an intriguing and fast past mystery filled with plenty of twists and turns. A solid and compelling mystery with a unique plot loaded with tension and suspense.

This trilogy has some intriguing world building and will undoubtedly appeal to fans of medieval war stories, royal scandal and dynastic conflict. Unfortunately the romance felt bland and emotionless to me and I struggled to connect to the characters.

Not for me. It has a compelling premise, but it devolves into something slow and unbearably dull, the plot lost in a sea of excessive and boring detail. I struggled to connect with any of the characters and the ideas failed to resonate. Uses similar concepts and devices to LforA and TFIOS by JG.

Part self-help book part chapter length essays on life, wealth, happiness, consumerism, success, gratitude, choice and time, filled with important messages and powerful quotes. A book about modern values and the legacy we leave behind. Hampered by a weak narrative and lack of character development.

A light and fun fantasy adventure perfect for lovers of the Chronicles of Narnia or Harry Potter. Positives; magical world building, strong female lead, cool adventures and great friendships. Negatives; a bit long with a meandering plot, you can easily skim read sections and miss nothing.

DNF. Illogical, frustrating and trying too hard to jump on the popular dystopia bandwagon. The plot makes no sense, characterisation is terrible, writing doesn't even try to step above mediocre and the action awful. This book is a mess and it makes me so sad because I LOVE dystopia.

Such an intelligent and atmospheric book; deliberate, layered and thought-provoking. Written in a muted greyscale that so effectively captures the heaviness and claustrophobia of the isolated mountain village setting. The world building is so unique and intriguing. A must read!
