Carol Carnac is another penname for E.C.R. Lorac, so I was eager to dig into this one. It's much as you'd expect from Lorac -- a solid enough mystery, some decent and ordinary characters, a hard-working and overall pretty pleasant detective, and a red herring or two. It's solid, not too surprising, and enjoyable in a very mild and *British* way.

This is one of those examples of vintage British crime when smug little Englander comments makes it hard to read. In this case especially if your Irish.

On the positive the female characters are not done horribly. There was also a good build up of tension.

But the ending was a lame duck and didn't pay off that build up. I felt like I was promised a thrilling ski chase through the Alps to the Soviet border and I didn't get it.

It‘s hot here today so I read a book partly set at a ski resort to cool me down! This is clever and twisty and has a really engaging split narrative
