All the Little Live Things
All the Little Live Things | Wallace Earle Stegner
6 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
Joe Allston, the retired literary agent of Stegner's National Book Award-winning novel, The Spectator Bird, returns in this disquieting and keenly observed novel. Scarred by the senseless death of their son and baffled by the engulfing chaos of the 1960s, Allston and his wife, Ruth, have left the coast for a California retreat. And although their new home looks like Eden, it also has serpents: Jim Peck, a messianic exponent of drugs, yoga, and sex; and Marian Catlin, an attractive young woman whose otherworldly innocence is far more appealingand far more dangerous."

VioletBramble @rubyslippersreads Those little books are the Everyman's Library Pocket Poets collection. The spines always have a pretty design to match the subject or poet. 7y

All the Little Live Things | Wallace Earle Stegner

It is the beginning of wisdom when you recognize that the best you can do is choose which rules you want to live by, and it's persistent and aggravated imbecility to pretend you can live without any.

Kammbia1 I just got a copy of this book last week. I have never read Wallace Stegner before. 8y

Pickpick

The depth that Stegner goes into the character of Joe Allston was amazing. An unlikeable character that I could not help becoming attached to. There are some parts of the book that I did not particularly enjoy, but overall, a good read. First book down for #24in48!

This is the book I am reading to start off my #24in48 readathon! I enjoyed Stegner's writing in Angle of Repose so want to read some of his other books. Hope to finish this one up tonight (or maybe first thing in the morning ... 😴)
