Set in nineteenth-century Australia, a sweeping novel about a secret passion between the explorer Voss and the young orphan Laura. As Voss is tested by hardship, mutiny, and betrayal during his crossing of the brutal Australian desert, Laura awaits his return in Sydney, where she endures their months of separation as if her life were a dream and Voss the only reality.

I‘m on hols & some op shops have opened back up. 🟰 $19.50. The fan was $3 & is going to be my prac fan for my ballet exam dance this yr. Giselle. 1 of the skirts was a 16 in the kids section so was only $4 the other Ken Done like 1 was $2 as it was 50% off as were all green 🏷 items. The 👒 surprisingly fits my big head & will be a quick drying 1 for the pool plus it‘s a fun print. The exercise videos are ones I used to do as a teen on VHS.

dabbe I love the background fabrics “almost“ as much as the books! #completelycolorcoordinated 1y

#marchmadness

Tried to find an author named Patrick on my shelves for this #stpatricksday challenge.

This novel (but based on real-life events), published in 1960, follows the epic journey of Voss as he crosses the Australian continent in 1845.

I think the cover is quite amusing, but makes the book look very ‘of it‘s time‘. I haven‘t read it but one can perhaps imagine..... 😬😮🙁

Eggs Great choice ☘️💚☘️ (edited) 4y
CarolynM I have to confess that I've never read Patrick White - very remiss of me since he is the only Australian to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature. I've seen a few of his plays. I think that's my reason for not reading him😬 4y

Pickpick

A naturalist who bulldozes the pretences of high society while trying to lose his own may not really sound exciting for all. It takes something (not just patience!) to get the pulse of Voss. The movement is almost like Inarittu's movies (say like 'Dog's Love') only with an unmatched intensity. Read for the exciting exploration of human psyche starting from the question 'Who am I?' (or in David Lynch's language, "What year is it?").

I quit. I have read more than half of this novel on the journey of Voss through Australia, but I have to admit I am really not interested in the outcome. I did like the conversations with and letters to Laura, but even those couldn't convince me of the need to finish this one.
