7 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
" Edgar Reichmann, Le Monde

Despite the clever title, this is NOT a fluffy book. It's a sharp-edged, uncomfortable, all-too-real window into the reality of the humans, good, evil, and indifferent, in WWII Prague. Altogether a book one ought to read, and enjoy. There are many stories of heroism and happy endings amid the horrors of WWII, but few that simply show the ordinariness of the evils of the Nazi regime. Weil is an excellent storyteller.

nerdcornerbooks Ugh, I can't handle the 451 character limit! I really need to read this one again. This is darned good literature (and when I have teenagers I'm going to make them read it.) 7mo
rretzler Welcome to Litsy! 📖 Yes, sometimes the character limit can be annoying if you have a lot to say about a book. Most people either continue in the comments or review somewhere else and leave a link. 7mo

A 50¢ library sale find today, in brand new condition ? A historical satire about Nazi rule in Prague that's been floating on my TBR.

Gorgeous novel. Begins as a clever, funny satire but develops enormous heart and sincerity as it continues. Really glad it was recommended to me and it would wrong of me not to recommend it again!

Recommended by a friend who read this after its mention in HHhH (another recommendation of his) not sure what it actually is but expecting something satirical which should be fun!

Mendelssohn is still on the roof! ( he is the fourth statue on the right side of the Rudolfinium). This wonderful book talks about the absurdity of the Nazi occupation in Prague with a lot of dark humor. With the premises that the statue of Jewish composer Mendelssohn must be taken out, but misinformation leads the statue of German ultranationalist Wagner to be taken out, because that was the one with the biggest nose!
