Going Postal | Terry Pratchett
post image

I DID IT. Back at the beginning of July I joined a reading challenge: all 41 books, 5 short stories, and 2 movies of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. To find an author whose books you can pick up any time of day, night, or life, and find yourself laughing and pondering and loving and learning...that, my friends is the reading adventure of a lifetime. I'm not sure I know what to do with myself right now so...send me your reading recommendations!

cmastfalk Wow! And here I am on my third month of reading Dracula! 4y

Envious Casca | Georgette Heyer

Mehso-so

I'm so used to Georgette Heyer writing Regency romance that I was not expecting a detective story between these pages (library copy, no cover clues.) It wasn't the best - I had the crime solved halfway through, and the POV switched maddeningly with no character getting much substantial development. But I did actually want to follow some of the characters after the book ended. (Having read other reviews, should I have read this as satire?)

Still working my way through the series. Words cannot express how much I love the wit and world of Terry Pratchett.

Last night was a recovery night. I came home from work, made dinner, and spent the rest of the evening on the sofa with books until it got dark. And oh it felt lovely!

Odd Thomas | Dean Ray Koontz
post image

1. _If_ I know the other person's taste and style, I LOVE recommending Dean Koontz for so many reasons that it'll have to be another post.
2. SpiderMan: Far From Home - cute, funny, good summer flick
3. Sweet corn! I'm so sad the rain made spring planting so bad in the Midwest.
4. Um...ten. I think.
5. Welcoming @Monstershaped from #habitica!

Red.Reads I recommend Odd Thomas to everyone too, haha. Its just fantastic, and possibly the only horror that's ever made me cry! I adore the whole series, and felt really sad after finishing it. I know some people complain about Dean Koontz' work, but he's never failed to engage and entertain me. 5y

Hogfather | Terry Pratchett

Pickpick

It's been good to return to Terry Pratchett's Discworld. I'm reading/rereading the whole series as part of a #habitica challenge, and Hogfather was new to me, but a delightful addition to the Death series. Gotta love the satire and parody mixed with just plain funny and highly skilled world- and character-building.

Red.Reads I *adore* the DiscWorld series. Ankh-Morpork was the place I often ran to when I was a kid and things were not great. The characters are so rich, the comedy is spot on. pTerry will always be one of my favourite authors, if not my absolute favourite. 5y

Hogfather | Terry Pratchett

Then the Dean repeated the mantra that has had such a marked effect on the progress of knowledge through the ages.
"Why don't we just mix up absolutely everything and see what happens?" he said.
And Ridcully responded with the traditional response.
"It's got to be worth a try," he said.

Mendelssohn is on the Roof | Ji? Weil, Marie Winn

Pickpick

Despite the clever title, this is NOT a fluffy book. It's a sharp-edged, uncomfortable, all-too-real window into the reality of the humans, good, evil, and indifferent, in WWII Prague. Altogether a book one ought to read, and enjoy. There are many stories of heroism and happy endings amid the horrors of WWII, but few that simply show the ordinariness of the evils of the Nazi regime. Weil is an excellent storyteller.

nerdcornerbooks Ugh, I can't handle the 451 character limit! I really need to read this one again. This is darned good literature (and when I have teenagers I'm going to make them read it.) 5y
rretzler Welcome to Litsy! 📖 Yes, sometimes the character limit can be annoying if you have a lot to say about a book. Most people either continue in the comments or review somewhere else and leave a link. 5y

Pirate Latitudes | Michael Crichton
Bailedbailed

Meh. It did have the excellent side-effect of reminding me how much I love Rafael Sabatini's Captain Blood! But I bailed. Usually I like Crichton but this isn't his best.

I'm brand new to Litsy but this looked like a fun bandwagon to jump on! So, my #FriYAYintro - 1) I think I have to say Lord of the Rings! 2) ketchup 3) does "fear of being trapped in a car underwater" count? 4) two sisters!

LibrarianRyan Hello newbie. Welcome! 5y
ImperfectCJ Welcome to Litsy! #3 has been a fear of mine since I was 4. I've still never owned a car with electric windows because I want to be able to roll them down if I drive into a lake. I don't think of it as a phobia, though, because it's completely logical. 😉 5y

nerdcornerbooks @ImperfectCJ YAY I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!! I lived in Michigan for a few years and the swamps on every street corner did -not- make me happy. 5y
ImperfectCJ @nerdcornerbooks Hmm... I wonder if that's why I like the desert... 5y
nerdcornerbooks @ImperfectCJ This would make sense! 😂 5y
xxjenadanxx Welcome!! And I would say that definitely counts as a phobia! 5y
cmastfalk I have the same fear. Intensified when I had multiple kids in harness-strapped car seats. Welcome to Litsy! 5y
nerdcornerbooks @cmastfalk thanks for sharing about Litsy! This is awesome! 5y

Simultaneously terrifying and hilarious. Speculative fiction isn't normally my thing and I do confess to skipping more science-y bits but. Storytelling? Five stars. Things I didn't want to know about Silicon Valley? Five stars for the horror of it. Life haunted by fear of an adolescent artificial intelligence? Five stars for lingering nightmares. Character development? Six and a half stars. And did I mention laugh-out-loud funny?

Gotta love a good murder mystery. One where you find yourself doubting the sanity of the narrator is always an asset, not to mention an unexpected plot twist (but not that unexpected plot twist...the other one.) This was good read and quite the page-turner!
