Jubilee
Jubilee: A Novel | Jennifer Givhan
6 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
When Bianca appears late one night at her brothers house in Santa Ana, she is barely conscious, though not alone. Jubilee, wrapped in a fuzzy pink romper, is buckled into a car seat. Jubilee, who Bianca feeds and clothes and bathes and loves. Jubilee, who Bianca could not leave behind. Jubilee, a doll in her arms. Told in alternating points of view, Jubilee reveals both the haunting power of our lived experiences and the surreal possibility of the present to heal the past. The first thread, Before Jubilee, follows Bianca in her girlhood home on the Mexicali border as she struggles with her high school sweetheart, Gabe, and a secret theyve shared since she was fifteen. The second thread, With Jubilee, is told from the point of view of her new love, Joshua, who, along with Biancas family, helps her cope with a mysterious trauma by accepting Jubilee as part of the family. As Joshuas love for Bianca grows, he fears that Jubilee has the power to tear his tiny family apart. Alternating chapters give readers a unique perspective on Biancas present and on her relationship with Jubilee as her past life with Gabe comes to a catastrophic end. Jubilee is at once a darkly suspenseful psychological drama and a luminous reflection on how beauty emerges from even the most traumatic of experiences.

Thanks to @Bookalong and @Butterflyamore for putting this strange and wonderful book on my radar. I really thought it was well done and I recommend it. It‘s dark, with themes of abuse and loss, but I didn‘t find it that hard to read for some reason. Bianca and Joshua were developed so well, and I wanted to find out what would happen to them.

Jubilee is literary fiction with dark, distressing themes. I know it won‘t be for every reader, but it‘s currently an underrated gem that deserves a bigger audience. I hope it will get all of the attention and love that it deserves.

A gorgeously told novel about mental illness, trauma, strength, love, loss and hope.
This story is about Bianca and baby Jubilee. Bianca cares for her fiercely and devotedly like any mother would. The only thing is Jubilee is a doll and Bianca is convinced without a doubt she is her daughter. Told in alternating chapters of before Jubilee and with Jubilee revealing what led Bianca to Jubilee and what she means to her. Heartbreaking and stunning!

For some reason, I thought this book was already out. Well, it is now - as of today - but I added it to my wishlist last month and somehow managed to blank on the pub date.

Here‘s the basic gist of the storyline: Bianca shows up at her brother‘s house one night. She isn‘t in the best ⬇️

abookishbutterfly state and she has Jubilee buckled into her car seat. But Jubilee isn‘t her daughter. She‘s a doll. A doll that Bianca is using to cope with unspeakable trauma.

This sounds like a heartbreaking and haunting read. I‘m thrilled that I was approved for a review copy from the publisher through NetGalley today and I‘m looking forward to telling you more about Jubilee once I read it!

Jubilee was by far the standout of this month. It was the only 5 star read for me. Least favorite was We Don‘t Talk About Her which was only a 1 star. Hopefully I can get more done in October 🤞🏼
