Machiavelli is a baddie in the series, but here we see him doing some good and protecting the chill fern of Paris during the French Revolution. This little story is worth every page, as Machiavelli risks the ire of Black Annis to help poor children and their families. It fits with his governmental roll in the main series quite nicely. Apparently he‘s been protecting Paris for quite some time.

julesG I think I haven't read this yet. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG the series or the short story? 4y

julesG This short story in particular. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG it just came out three days ago, so that‘s probably why. He‘s returned to this series and a new short story comes out every month for the next severs months. I know it goes into 2021. 4y
julesG Thanks! 4y
GingerAntics @julesG you‘re welcome! I love exploring the world of this series. I had no idea anyone else had read this series. 4y
julesG I loved this series. Just bought the first five books, in translation, for the kids. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG oh cool! I hope they enjoy them. 4y
julesG Just bought the two stories. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG I can‘t wait to hear what you think. 4y
Ericalambbrown OMG! If I‘d had just seen this as a poster out of context, I‘d have thought this was some Harry Potter fantasy ripoff Michael Scott from the Office cooked up. Much like his awful Threat Level Midnight screenplay. 😂 I totally had to do a double take like “wait . . . what?” 4y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown maybe that‘s why some reviewers have said it‘s an HP rip off. It‘s nothing like HP, other than it has magic; but in this world anyone can learn magic. 4y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown this is a prequel short story, but it will make more sense if you‘ve read the series first. The main series is really good if you like magic, adventures, good vs evil, and of course some prophesied twins (with a twist on that front at the end). I‘ve read the series twice now, but I‘m thinking I‘m going to do a chapter a day next year like we did with HP this year. 4y
Ericalambbrown @GingerAntics it sounds wonderful! Honestly I saw Michael Scott‘s name and went straight to thinking about the office 😂 4y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown is that a character name from the show? I haven‘t seen it. 4y
Ericalambbrown @GingerAntics yes! He‘s the obnoxious boss in the American version. 4y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown oh okay. I don‘t think that guy wrote a book. This Michael Scott is nicer than that. 😂 4y
GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown oh that‘s Steve Carell‘s character. Okay. That‘s pretty much the only person I know from that show. 😂 (edited) 4y

GingerAntics @Ericalambbrown @julesG this isn‘t my genre at all, but he writes romance novels under the name Anna Dillon. 😳 You could knock me over with a feather. He really does right any genre that takes his fancy!!! 4y
Ericalambbrown @GingerAntics I really need to check him out. His stuff looks great. I‘ve been looking for new authors 4y
GingerAntics He‘s got everything from adventure and sci fi to horror, even nonfiction. It seems he‘s got something for every reader. 4y

julesG @GingerAntics What? I didn't know that. I'll have to read one to find out now. 4y
GingerAntics @julesG right? I don‘t usually do romance, but now I‘m intrigued. What does a man write when he writes romance?! 4y
julesG Under a female pen name 4y
GingerAntics @julesG I think you‘d have to. Women are the main consumers of romance, and I‘m not sure a male name would really appeal. If I were going to write romantic fiction, I‘d probably do it under a pseudonym, too, to be honest. 4y
julesG Matt Dunn comes to mind 4y
GingerAntics @julesG I guess I‘ve just never seen romance novels written by a man, under a man‘s name. 🤘🏻 I‘ve only really seen the romance novels in the grocery store though. They‘re really not my thing. I remember giggling at a few when some friends got some in jr high, but that‘s about it. 4y

I love how so much of this entire series takes on these old Irish sayings and values as central themes.

So even though he ends up trying to help destroy the world and return humans to their original rolls as “food and cattle,” he was raised well. Go figure.

Okay, “about the author” is on page 72. It‘s not what my “writing short fictions” professor called a short story, but by her definition, 99% of short stories are actually novellas.

I‘m really hoping these are some short chapters, or this is more of a novella than a short story. Hm.

Another short story from this series to relax before bed. One more day of work, then I have some group reads to prepare for. Machiavelli was always an interesting character in this series (Shakespeare is in it, too!). I‘m hoping this is more of his back story and in his own words.
