All the Children Are Home: A Novel | Patry Francis
5 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
A sweeping saga in the vein of Ask Again, Yes following a foster family through almost a decade of dazzling triumph and wrenching heartbreakfrom the author of The Orphans at Race Point. Set in the late 1950s through 1960s in a small town in Massachusetts, All the Children Are Home follows the Moscatelli familyDahlia and Louie, foster parents, and their long-term foster children Jimmy, Zaidie, and Jonand the irrevocable changes in their lives when a six-year-old indigenous girl, Agnes, is comes to live with them.. When Dahlia decided to become a foster mother, she had a few caveats: no howling newborns, no delinquents, and above all, no girls. A harrowing incident years before left her a virtual prisoner in her own home, forever wary of the heartbreak and limitation of a girls life. Eleven years after they began fostering, the Moscatellis are raising three children as their own and Dahlia and Louie consider their family complete, but when the social worker begs them to take a young girl who has been horrifically abused and neglected, they cant say no. Six-year-old Agnes Juniper arrives with no knowledge of her Native American heritage or herself beyond a box of trinkets given to her by her mother and dreamlike memories of her sister. Before long, this stranger in their midst has strengthened the bond in this unusual family, showing them how to contend with outside forces that want to tear them apart. Heartfelt and enthralling, All the Children Are Home is a moving testament to how love can survive in the face of devastating losses.

My #BookClub discusses this one on Thursday and I can‘t wait! This superbly written family drama set in the 1950s-1960s MA was another unexpected #OneSittingRead for me! Highlighting the healing power of found family, I didn‘t want the story of the Moscatellis and their foster children to end! Multiple perspectives spanning years and characters that leap from the pages displays Francis‘ stellar talents! I loved this one! Keep the tissues handy!

ALL THE CHILDREN ARE HOME by Patry Francis
“I come home, Ma!“ she said. That quote there broke me down to the core....
This is a very beautifully written book. A heart wrenching story of a family so mixed and so messed up you will wonder how they are ever going to make it. A story of a love so strong it can weather anything. A mother who cares so much for a group of children you would never guess she is not their biological mother.
5/5 huge star

What a beautifully written portrait of what it means to be family. Dahlia and Louie are foster parents who have taken in children both willingly and, at times, begrudgingly. This is a story of how family ties are formed and broken; of how our hearts can be captured by others even when we fight against it; and of how it is possible to grow beyond our traumas and find happiness in others around us. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
