I keep accidentally picking up sci-fi mysteries, and I‘m a little puzzled by the sub-genre. In Sci-fi one of the mysteries that moves you through the story is “how does the universe work in this story?” Trying to unravel both a universe and a who-done it seems like it will leave one or the other short changed.

I am in love with these characters. Which is quite the feat considering this is a novella. The world is fascinating, though we just get thrown into the action without any worldbuilding being done. There were some parts in the plot that confused me, mostly which name belonged to which character, but eventually I figured it out. Will be checking out other novellas set in this world. Can‘t get enough of these sci-fi mysteries!

Sunless Woods is a mindship that has made a long and illustrious career of being a thief. Vân is a poor tutor with a scandalous secret. When a visitor dies in the quarters of Vân's student, Sunless Woods is drawn to the mystery, which might lead to more corpses. Much larger corpses. In this extrapolation of Vietnamese culture into space, memory implants are the honored ancestors and mindships are dragons - vast, ancient, wise, and unpredictable.
