pickThis Nat‘l Book Award finalist follows two kids, baker‘s daughter Bluma and fatherless ne‘er-do-well Yehuda Leib, from their shtetl of Tupik into the Far Country, a spirit realm from Jewish folklore, each seeking something from Death. Full of beautiful metaphors and deliciously creepy imagery, it is very satisfying symbolically, but less so on a more literal narrative level, especially for middle grades.
