15 posts | 8 read
From a creative team with multiple Caldecott Honors comes this vibrant portrait of Aretha Franklin that pays her the R-E-S-P-E-C-T this Queen of Soul deserves. Aretha Franklin was born to sing. The daughter of a pastor and a gospel singer, her musical talent was clear from her earliest days in her fathers Detroit church where her soaring voice spanned more than three octaves. Her string of hit songs earned her the title the Queen of Soul, multiple Grammy Awards, and a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But Aretha didnt just raise her voice in song, she also spoke out against injustice and fought for civil rights. This authoritative, rhythmic picture book biography will captivate young readers with Arethas inspiring story.

The daughter of a pastor and a gospel vocalist, her musical prowess manifested early in her life within her father's Detroit church. Her series of chart-topping songs earned her the revered title of “the Queen of Soul,“ multiple Grammy Awards, and a distinguished place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. However, Aretha's impact extended beyond her melodic expressions; she also used her voice to denounce injustice and champion civil rights.

In my classroom, I would use this book to talk about people who made a difference in the black history movement and who are well-known.

This book is a biography because it is about a specific person and its main point is to inform the reader about that person. The book also is clear that there was research done on Aretha Franklin before making the book. The information is accurate!

This quick read #PictureBook bio of Aretha Franklin plays off of her best known song (see the title of this book) and uses a rhyming structure to tell a very basic overview of her life. What I love most are the illustrations - so vivid and colorful and poetic on their own. Beware - you may feel like belting out her hits after reading this one! #BBRC #LetterR

This amazing biography picture book spells out powerful words just as Aretha did in her iconic anthem R-E-S-P-E-C-T! The words convey important elements of her career, work, and life as an artist, activist, and family woman.

ToddSalerno Teachers can make connections to her music by playing selections of her songs in class, which would be an audio connection to the spelling in the book. Students can also practice spelling out the letters (either writing or verbally reciting) during the shared reading.
