Welcome to the New World
Welcome to the New World | Jake Halpern
8 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
Now in a full-length book, the New York Times Pulitzer Prizewinning graphic story of a refugee family who fled the civil war in Syria to make a new life in America After escaping a Syrian prison, Ibrahim Aldabaan and his family fled the country to seek protection in America. Among the few refugees to receive visas, they finally landed in JFK airport on November 8, 2016, Election Day. The family had reached a safe harbor, but woke up to the world of Donald Trump and a Muslim ban that would sever them from the grandmother, brothers, sisters, and cousins stranded in exile in Jordan. Welcome to the New World tells the Aldabaans story. Resettled in Connecticut with little English, few friends, and even less money, the family of seven strive to create something like home. As a blur of language classes, job-training programs, and the fearsome first days of high school (with hijab) give way to normalcy, the Aldabaans are lulled into a sense of security. A white van cruising slowly past the house prompts some unease, which erupts into full terror when the family receives a death threat and is forced to flee and start all over yet again. The America in which the Aldabaans must make their way is by turns kind and ignorant, generous and cruel, uplifting and heartbreaking. Delivered with warmth and intimacy, Jake Halpern and Michael Sloan's Welcome to the New World is a wholly original view of the immigrant experience, revealing not only the trials and successes of one family but showing the spirit of a town and a country, for good and bad.

Excellent work of graphic journalism. Halpern and Sloan spent over three years with the Aldabaan family, Syrian refugees. They arrive in the U.S. in 2016 and we follow their overwhelming and intimidating first months trying to learn English, secure employment and housing, adjust to school and more. An intimate look at the immigrant experience.

Journalist Jake Halpern embedded himself in this family of Syrian refugees who arrived in Connecticut (via Jordan) on the day Trump was elected. The main focus is Naji, the eldest of 5 children, but I found my heart going out to the parents. They were told they‘d have 3 months of financial support before having to make it on their own. Funny incidents enliven this tale of courage & resilience. Fluid, bold art & lettering by Michael Sloan. #comics

The scenes set in Homs, before the Aldabaan fled Syria, are some of the most heart wrenching in this book.

The people who have volunteered to help a Syrian refugee family settle in Connecticut include drivers who will take them to medical appointments. All of the drivers in the Aldabaan‘s transportation team are elderly. And seem to be terrible drivers!

Lauredhel @dandy.punk note : she does not use the giant sword in this volume! But it is a great start to her origin story, very engaging. 3y

Thankful for people who are still able to donate books to classrooms during these hard times! I requested copies of this novel for our school‘s “Angel Tree” program because my students love graphic novels and the family in this story ends up right in New Haven where I teach, so this important global issue will feel local to my students!
