Do you believe in curses?I never did.Not until that fated night, six years ago, when I sat in The Devil's Chair and made a wish. Not until it came true. Not until I met River Caliban himself, heir to a fortune of curses. My fated sworn enemy.I knew I should have stayed away from him. I should have run the other way when he called out my name, when he flashed that sinful smile of his, but instead, I walked toward him, leaving the light behind. Instead, I go against all reason, against all warning, and attended the gala of the year at his dark, allegedly haunted home at the top of the hill. The moment I step foot inside I know I'm in trouble, but there's something about River that magnetizes me, reels me in, and when he asks for the impossible, I find it impossible to turn him away.

I was really disappointed with this modern #gothic. Sexual assault that wasn‘t necessary to story, unconvincing #romantsy,& unsatisfying explanation for the fable part of the story. A couple of chapters were in the hero‘s POV which felt very deus ex machina. It had potential to be great but it just wasn‘t.

Dark and rich descriptions make this gothic romance. I really enjoyed the world building and the whole feeling of the unknown throughout the story. I really enjoyed the slightly spicy romance, it was similar to Romeo and Juliet but with a twist, and I loved River Caliban as the love interest, he's mysterious, cocky and says all the right things. The plot was full of fables and some paranormal aspects which made it creepy yet romantic.

Gothic romances will forever be my favorite. It's hard to find modern gothic romances. Most are classics or historical fiction so I was excited when I found this one. I wish this book was longer and went into more detail about the fables, islands and curse. The atmosphere and paranormal elements were perfect however and completely made this book. #gothicromance #romantsy

I love pretty chapter headers in books. I don't have many books with these so I get a little too excited for them.😄

This was the perfect book for my current reading mood! It has all the things: supernatural elements, a Gothic atmosphere, local mythology, mystery, and forbidden romance. Definitely going to be picking up more from this author!

Fables & Other Lies was one of those books I didn‘t want to put down but also didn‘t want it to end. This was perfect for 2020 to get take a break from reality. There are so many facets to this book that it‘s hard to express in a book, so I suggest just reading the book.

Thank you Claire Contreras for Fables & Other Lies.
