For fans of Jenny Han, Jane Austen, and The Great British Baking Show, A Taste for Love, is a delicious rom com about first love, familial expectations, and making the perfect bao. To her friends, high school senior Liza Yang is nearly perfect. Smart, kind, and pretty, she dreams big and never shies away from a challenge. But to her mom, Liza is anything but. Compared to her older sister Jeannie, Liza is stubborn, rebellious, and worst of all, determined to push back against all of Mrs. Yang's traditional values, especially when it comes to dating. The one thing mother and daughter do agree on is their love of baking. Mrs. Yang is the owner of Houston's popular Yin & Yang Bakery. With college just around the corner, Liza agrees to help out at the bakery's annual junior competition to prove to her mom that she's more than her rebellious tendencies once and for all. But when Liza arrives on the first day of the bake-off, she realizes there's a catch: all of the contestants are young Asian American men her mother has handpicked for Liza to date. The bachelorette situation Liza has found herself in is made even worse when she happens to be grudgingly attracted to one of the contestants; the stoic, impenetrable, annoyingly hot James Wong. As she battles against her feelings for James, and for her mother's approval, Liza begins to realize there's no tried and true recipe for love.

Fantastic fun! Strong characters and fabulous food writing paired with a nod to Pride and Prejudice make this a must read.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a mother in possession of great wisdom, must be in want—nay, in need—of a daughter who will listen.”

Cute opening line but this mother was a horrible person. She was constantly verbally abusive to her daughter. And it was justified by her and other characters with I/She justs wants what's best for you. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig There were things I liked Baking, Pride and Prejudice Retelling but ultimately I'm glad this was a Borrow not Buy for #austeninaugust. Minor Spoiler ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Mother tells daughter she can't compete in Baking Contest because it would appear to be favoritism if daughter won. Yet the mother who created Contest and Judges it; is actively helping Contestants. Plus she picked all the Contestants based on trying to set her daughter up. 2y
CaramelLunacy A shame, that cover is too cute 2y

Am I reading a lot of baking themed books lately? Yes. Anyway, a matchmaking mom decided to choose contestants for the baking competition based primarily on their eligibility to date her daughter? Said daughter is horrified, and also maybe finds one of the contestants not terrible? Shenanigans ensue. For #RippedBodiceBingo, can be used for food on the cover and graduation.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a cute YA rom com, but it wasn't as annoying as some of the other ones I have read have been. There were a lot of interesting moments and I liked the pacing of the book.

As a Taiwanese American girl, this checked every single box for me. All the food mentions and the restaurant descriptions are a bonus because I‘ve been there, done that. And name dropping Jay & Jolin is the cherry on top. This is the book I hoped Loveboat would be; I feel like this is the best representation of my ABC life. But, maybe if I was a bit younger 😂😂😂
