The Body Scout
The Body Scout | Lincoln Michel

Diamond-sharp and savagely wry, The Body Scout is a timely science fiction thriller debut set in an all-too-possible future, perfect for readers of William Gibson. Kobo has some problems. His cybernetics are a decade out of date, he's got a pair of twin sister loan sharks knocking on his door, and his work scouting for a baseball league run by pharmaceutical companies is about to go belly-up. Things couldn't get much worse. Then his childhood best friend-Monsanto Mets slugger J.J. Zunz-is murdered at home plate. Determined to find the killer, Kobo plunges into the dark corners and glittering cloud condos of a world ravaged by climate change and repeat pandemics, and where genetic editing and advanced drugs mean you can have any body you want--as long as you can afford it. But even among the philosophical Neanderthals, zootech weapons, and genetically modified CEOs, there's a curveball he never could have called.

I‘d say The Body Scout is a bit of a cross between the body horror of Altered Carbon and the humor of Futurama, while being set amidst the backstage dealings of the baseball world. The world building is great, the humor is not always laugh out loud but there is plenty of it, and the characters are fleshed out (pun intended) pretty well. It‘s not perfect, but for someone who cares not a lick about baseball I really enjoyed this book

My usual jam is Classic Literary Fiction. But as a writer myself I recognize how important it is to support new writers as well. And not only that, but to move beyond my comfort zone. As consumers of art it‘s harder to give something unknown a chance. I know nothing about Lincoln Michel and I hate baseball, but I do enjoy ‘body genre‘. Something about this book said: READ ME. And so far, I‘m digging it.

I really enjoyed this book. Kobo is a fun character. The dystopian setting is interesting and unique in some ways.

Sports novels aren't typically my thing, but if you mix it with sci-fi, mystery, & a touch of thriller, it's up my alley. A gritty & intriguing read, this dystopian focusing on body modification had me hooked. The world is fantastic, pacing is solid, & the characters are diverse & interesting. There is a lot of baseball in here, but the mystery, scheming, & intrigue took over. Baseball fans will get even more satisfaction, but I had a great time.

#readathon #deweys24hourreadathon enjoyed this one! I haven't read a baseball book in a while, so that was cool, even though it's more about desperate people with crushing medical debt, what happens when science runs amok and corporations own everything... (hint, It's not great!) Also there's a bit of a murder mystery. Give it a try if any of those things sound interesting! ✅

"????? ??? ?????. ?????????? ?????? ??? ???? ??? ????. ???? ???? ??? ? ????."⁣

I was completely intrigued by this futuristic NYC, whether I'd consider it a better world or dystopia, I still can't say for sure. I was invested in the main character and the plotline, needing to find out what happened to baseball star, JJ Zunz. It's definitely one of those books that I'll never forget. ⁣

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #NetGalley

My #BookSpin book this month was this fast-paced sci-fi thriller. In a futuristic world where humans can enhance themselves through cybernetics, the main character, Kobo, finds himself being chased by loan sharks over the money he owes for his upgrades all while trying to track down his adopted brother's killer. Lots of action and some interesting plot twists.

I was a big fan of this one. 💚
