A Rhythm of Prayer
A Rhythm of Prayer: A Collection of Meditations for Renewal | Sarah Bessey
10 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
For the weary, the angry, the anxious, and the hopeful, this collection of moving, tender prayers offers rest, joyful resistance, and a call to act, written by Barbara Brown Taylor, Amena Brown, Nadia Bolz-Weber, and other artists and thinkers, curated by the author Glennon Doyle calls my favorite faith writer. Its no secret that we are overworked, overpressured, and edging burnout. Unsurprisingly, this fact is as old as timeand thats why we see so many prayer circles within a multitude of church traditions. These gatherings are a trusted space where people seek help, hope, and peace, energized by God and one another. This book, curated by acclaimed author Sarah Bessey, celebrates and honors that prayerful tradition in a literary form. A companion for all who feel the immense joys and challenges of the journey of faith, this collection of prayers says it all aloud, giving readers permission to recognize the weight of all they carry. These writings also offer a broadened imagination of hopeof what can be restored and made new. Each prayer is an original piece of writing, with new essays by Sarah Bessey throughout. Encompassing the full breadth of the emotional landscape, these deeply tender yet subversive prayers give readers an intimate look at the diverse language and shapes of prayer.

I loved this so much. I had a copy from the library and intended to use it through Lent, but ended up renewing it multiple times because it was such a comfort for my soul, through Lent and beyond. The prayers collected here capture well these past few years of upheaval, and while they don‘t expressly deal with grief, they helped me during the difficult weeks leading up to and following my mom‘s passing. I‘ll be buying a copy for my own shelf.

Really enjoyed this book. Looking forward to gifting this to many friends. I listened in bites as I drove around and it was perfect. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

God of Compassion…we thank you for seeing us. For seeing our loneliness & our bravery. For seeing the times we can‘t say what we need to. For seeing the ones who have never felt like they are enough, but whom you know already are & always have been. For seeing the moments when we are more than we thought we could be. For seeing what no one else can or will….for seeing as beautiful what we call ugly. In your compassion, teach us to see each other.

“God, teach us to pause in this moment, to tuck ourselves into the curve of your slow arm, that we may know the miracle of now, the gift of this moment: you beside and beyond us, welcoming us outside of all we measure, and standing with us in it. May we see the goodness of our still hours and days, sunrises, sunsets, and the darkness where our rest is found.”

Today marks Ash Wednesday in the Christian tradition, and I began my Lenten practice this morning using the tagged book. And if the introduction and first prayer weren't enough confirmation that these prayers and reflections are exactly what I need right now, I turned the page to mark my place for tomorrow and found this quote. 💜

A balm for my angry, anxious, sad, pandemic-overwhelmed soul.

I started reading this ecumenical collection of prayers and meditations during Lent, one entry a day, and found it really healing and nourishing to encounter contemporary women wrestling with their faith in very human, relatable ways.🔸#marchreads2021

I will read and love anything Sarah Bessey puts her hands on and this was no exception. As she and the other contributors offer up examples of all the different forms prayer can take, they paint a picture of El-Roi - the God who sees. He sees all of us and loves all of us and there is room for all of us to talk to Him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Releases Feb. 9 #netgalley
